Presumably the only livery any revival could have would be a br one? Personally I'd favour br maroon...

We’ve started early I see... I’ll let other members decide what I’m referring to first, the afternoon drinking or the livery wibble!

Personally I think whoever takes this on should see if the NRM would fancy chucking the other one their way too. After all both have knackered boilers (even though one is *considerably* more knackered than the other) so may as well build a pair of them.

(I don’t suppose grandfather rights apply if you build a new barrel for the NRMs firebox, a new firebox for the NRM’s barrel, and then a new firebox and barrel respectively for both resulting boilers, do they? So I guess there is going to be a lot of design and approval to do to build one new boiler; there have to be some economies of scale by building two, surely?)

What is the general opinion of the 'Crabs' they seemed to do pretty much every job from Ayrshire coal trains to Expresses.

They were excellent engines and probably the best of the pre-Stanier LMS classes, although the Fowler Class 4 tanks ran them close. At first, they were common on express passenger workings, but speed increases and the introduction of bigger wheeled engines saw a decline in these. Even so, they worked their other types of train right through the Stanier era and into BR days, the last, 2942, not being withdrawn until January 1967.

As far as I know, as long as you have something from the original boiler then it's not a new build. If someone from 61264 is on here then they might be able to tell you what was kept from their nearly brand new boiler. And I read somewhere that the foundation ring survived From the binbrook crab, so maybe that could be a start.
Whoever does have this I hope they have very deep pockets and it doesn't sit around for another 20 years before anything starts. That would be such a shame. I truely believe this loco could be brought back from the brink, and it would be such a beautiful machine. It would look lovely in a pool of Hughes/Fowler locos, Patriot, 4P tank, crab... Haha

Point of order, Gav: however good the Crabs were, no-one would describe them as 'beautiful'!

    Its out in shops now.

Anyway does anyone know what else survived from Binbrook ? I know from old photographs they used to be a container next to it before it was moved, could it be parts ?

I'm really glad that this locomotive has been saved, and that its future now looks a lot better than it did just a few months ago. Clearly a massive restoration job, but at least it's now at the same location as the sole operating Crab. Presumably there are at least some surviving drawings for missing major components, not least the boiler & firebox. At least it's a parallel boiler too, should be easier to construct than a taper boiler. May I wish the new owner, whoever he is, the best of luck.

    Richard.

I dunno. Is there enough of it left to be anything more than a few spares for the other one? If its just frames and wheels, and anything else that existed has gone missing then...

There are many projects which started with a lot less: an A1, P2, Standard 3MT, etc., etc.

What's more, a Crab would be a welcome addition on many heritage railways. Not the best looking locos but some of the most useful. When 42765 visited the NYMR one well-known person was heard to say "It's just like the K1; only better."

It would be quite ironic after all that has gone before if the frames turned out to be so shagged after years out in all weathers that new ones were required anyway! ;)
