Yes, they are very good, aren't they? I had a very good e-conversation with the owner of the web site who was very interested in our project and happy to alow us a link on our web site. Although we have a lot of drawings, there's nothing like the real McCoy. The revised drawings does show the stub of the vents so maybe that has what has happened to Britannia. I've got access to 71000 cannon box photos but I can't see the vent pipes anywhere.

Our design team have been working on the cannon box CAD models (see the appeals page) and have come up with an elegant seal system for the ends of the axles. The class 5 cannon box drawing used a leather seal. The class 6 drawing shows a revised arrangement but doesn't seem to include a seal - other than a labyrinth metal seal. We intend to have a meeting with Timken before we proceed to manufacture.

With grease lubrication, I'd have thought that relief valves would have been fitted.

Yes agreed. Our revised design has an indicator to show when sufficient grease has been applied. Whenever you do car bearings, you're told to leave some air space

Air space = space for moisture. Be careful.

Sheff - would you advocate filling the cannon boxes full of grease and having some form of relief valve to show when you've pumped enough grease in?

I would talk to the people who really know at Darlington. I can only give you my observations from the occasional cleaning turn and information give by the Trust to their supporters.

Have you read the latest Steam Railway? Both 70000 and 71000 require new roller bearings due to water ingress.

I haven't yet but thanks for the tip. We had started with the Class 5 cannon box drawing - that has a leather seal at the ends with an adjustment ring and washer. There should be a modern alternative to this. The Class 6 drawings show the adjustment ring replaced by an enclosure ring. Our design team are looking at using modern seals at the outer ends.
