Not only when steam locos have finished for the day Robin. At Herston on Saturday I filmed a class 33 diesel in glorious light hauling an impressive goods train. That brought back some happy memories. <BJ>

To be fair, if you go stand on that platform nowadays and look in the direction of the Bath Road depot site, all you will see is a derelict wasteland! You do see spotters fairly regularly at the London end of the station.

Generally agree with you but would just point out the new diesel depot on the SVR at Kidderminster. As well as loco jacks there is an overhead crane to lift out roof accessed equipment

A little local knowledge would be much appreciated.

Somerset Council website reports that the roadworks and associated 24/7 road closure on the A358 at Sampford Brett are complete (apart from white-lining) and the road is now fully open again.

Can anybody please confirm this, as I'm travelling to Blue Anchor on Wednesday and that is my preferred route.

I would like to know legally what happened to the money we donated on Minehead station towards the restoration of 4110, & the WSRA are very late giving a summary of last months trustee meeting.

Interesting six page report about the WSR situation in the new issue of The Railway Magazine (out Wednesday this week). I highly recommend reading this article.

One question it does raise is what will happen with 6024 when her overhaul is complete as she is now too heavy to work over the line due to enforced weight restrictions? She would have been a big draw for visitors to the WSR during her running in period before returning to ML duties.

When Diesels go to bed then the Tampers come out to play.

That's why they have so many lights fitted. 20170209_151513 (1).jpg

The only reason steam goes on shed first is because they had to get up so bl**dy early in the morning!

I was with my oldest sons at Swanage on Saturday afternoon waiting for the 1600 - T9 & 419, it was delightful listening to the 33 on the freight chuntering away while we waited for our train to arrive.

One other thing about diesels of course is that they can make it possible to offer a more 'commercially attractive' service than an all steam operation could justify

Maybe but the paint doesn’t change the weight or axle loading :)

Positive news from the folk at DEPG. <BJ>

''The line will fully open to Minehead on Good Friday after replacement of a failed point at Blue Anchor.

Crompton D6566 will be working the return leg of the three-times-daily services between Bishops Lydeard and Watchet for the next two weeks (not Mondays or Fridays).

Crompton D6575 will be covering the Diesel Driver Experience Courses and the Quantock Belle services''.

Large (heavy) loco's are out of the question until major permanent way work is carried out on the track bed and the rails used. Excessive wear at the base of the rails in the chairs has been found.
The article mentions that there are severe problems on the curve at Blue Anchor and at Stogumber where the embankments are crumbling.
