This video was captured from the front window behind 5029 'Nunney Castle' as it attempted to ascend the steep climb to Tytherington Quarry with "The Avon Branch Explorer" on 9th May 2004. The train would ultimately stall just short of the quarry itself and would require assistance from a class 66 which was sent from Bristol to help the train into the sidings.

    I was on that trip

The 'Avon Branch Line Explorer' concept was an excellent idea, its a pity it hasnt either been done again or tried elsewhere

That put me in mind of a memorable Vintage Trains tour I went on in 2010. 45305 with 12 on to Buxton, on a damp (to say the least!) October day. The climb from Peak Forest to Buxton was eventually successful, but only after some superb skill on the regulator and a lot of hand sanding.

EDIT: I think it was a ten coach load, not twelve.

A couple of videos here (not mine)...

Yeah,a memorable trip,a Cardiff Valleys type of trip in a similar vain is one we need the most I think.

It must be the style as well as the content which I recognised then :)

I believe it was Bill Andrew.

I took a video of some of the trip, but YouTube bu99ered it up a few years ago, and it now looks like it was a broad gauge train :mad:

Haha yes that does look a little on the "wide" side! Nice video though all the same, totally different viewpoint.
