Have to admit being a bit gobsmacked by the recent comments and can only presume some sort of collective madness has descended

With any restoration how often does the heart rule the head . If the head ruled we would have a lot less running and far fewer lines

Back to 42859 . Enough survives to be the basis of a restoration. The firebox was known to be on a bad way so very extensive surgery was always going to be needed. Building new would quite probably have been an option . Let’s see what happens

Well said that man. If the head did rule the heart in all aspects of life, this forum would be a lot quieter!! Most of us wouldn't have been born.

To be fair we've spent the last two weekends dismantling 8233's first bogie with the intention of putting parts back together later this year .Meanwhile 5705's electrical cubicle is being built .The locos are worked on every weekend and midweek too and they should both be running before I retire .We are doing the job properly as we don't intend being around for the second rebuild !

You obviously have it in you, thats a very nice and sensible post. So why do you have to be so sarcastic in some of your other posts?

D5705 is I think privately owned. Not sure of the loan terms.

Clearly the frames do still exist then, So does anyone know for sure exactly what has been lost, wasn't one set of driving wheels found separate from the rest, was these returned?

Guessing it was asked to be removed.
Not that there was much to the picture, just proof that it is there.

We have received a query over the circumstances under which it was possible to take the photo but your action has removed the potential problem. So thanks for doing that.

    Hello:)
I`m currently reading about the LMS Hughes/Fowler 'Crab class' in the book 'L.M.S.R locomotives in detail' by Ian Beattie. There are some information I find interesting
among other things the note; 'The cylinders were located unusually high on the frames to comply with platform clearance, although these were later found to be needlessly extravagant'.
The latter is new information for me but is this a matter of fact?

    regards,
    Knut:)

Has anything actually happened , restoration wise on what remains of the loco since the last posting, which was some 3 years ago ? I expect that it will have to wait until the owner has himself passed on, before anything practical can happen, It's very sad that, the engine escaped Barry, only to end up as nothing but an incomplete set of parts .

It would seem so. The Stanier version of the loco had its cylinders in a more orthodox position after Stanier proved it was unnecessary once a few minor platform alterations were done.

I thought there was only the frames/cylinders left as the boiler was cut up and all the wheels and tender frames were mia?

It is explained in Cox book Locomotive Panorama.
Hughes did not like boiler pressures over 180 psi and the cylindres needed to be 21 inch in diameter for the work .
Along comes a mr Stanier who redesigns with a new boiler with 225 psi and 18 inch cylinder and and get a warning from the civils that platform clearanc will be to small.
A suitable test locomotive gets a cylinder mock up and tries clearance all over England and only a few platform edges need a small operation to allow his new 2-6-0 with horizontal 18 inch cylinders to pass.
It was not tested that the Hughes 21 inch cylinders could have been horizontal as well.
