As 41001 is now fully operational (and visiting a number of other preserved lines as well), the "Project" could be classed as completed, I would imagine.

The Isle of Wight's system is the original single pipe system which could be described graduated application with total release.

I had presumed that as locos such as 03's and 33's had crossed the Solent and worked the vintage air braked stock, the 41 could also? (hypothetically of course, I think it was mentioned on another thread the Ferry companies won't take heavier locos)

Iknow it might be more expensive than normal carriers but the electricity industry use special flat bed barges to transport transformers by sea on a transformer trailer. For unloadingthey simplyneed a concrete apron as alreadyesisr at the ferry terminal

To like this is slightly wrong, I have to say the 125 group have been so professional. To have had so much support from so many folks from the 'big railway', something isn't quite right upstairs at York is it?

Shame for the group, but at the end of the day, York have honoured their end of the agreement, and everyone always knew they would want it back sooner or later.
I'd have liked it to get 10 operational years as a steam loco normally would, but that's life.

As has been discussed several times during recent years on NP the NRM has been moving towards policies that emphasise that it is a museum not an operator of historic vehicles. More disappointments for traditional enthusiasts lie in the future.

That said, the 125 Group have proven they can do it, hopefully it's not too long before we see some Valenta-engined production power cars in classic liveries once again.

Sad to see it mothballed if that is what is about to happen but looking on the positive side, the loan has probably given the 125 Group the solid funding and membership foundations needed for long term existence, hopefully to preserve a production set. Whilst its good to see 41001 in action, it was a prototype that only saw test use pre-preservation. The real success story of the High Speed Train was in the 44 years (and counting) that the production models were arguably the leading service workhorse in passenger rail. That story needs to be preserved - if we end up with a full set operational and the prototype gathering dust as a museum curio, I'd rather that than we just have 41001 to represent this era of British railway history.

Not quite true - it was put into revenue-earning service on a Paddington - Weston-super-Mare diagram for a good period. I remember seeing it hammering along the Down Main between Reading and Didcot.

Not making any excuses for the NRM*, but there are always two sides to any story and frankly we don't appear to have even heard one side to this one yet?

As noted elsewhere the project has if nothing else allowed the group to build a strong foundation for the future, show whats its capable of and build a strong support base, I wish them every success in the future which I am sure they will enjoy. Assuming they move forward with production units they will have no third party to keep happy! Just out of interest as its way outside my comfort zone, could 41001 have worked at one end of a set with a production PC at the other?

    * I have no idea what is/is not happening at the NRM, getting a handle seems rather difficult when one notes the strange somewhat hysterical reporting of the topic much beloved by SR for the last couple of years.

41001 has worked at one end with a production PC at the other, and with other air braked locomotives too. I've seen a dignified statement from the 125 Group, and am personally saddened by the fact that one of the most interesting restorations of recent years has retreated to the sidelines. I fear that this reflects a changing policy of the NRM towards operation of their exhibits, not just about mitigating cost, but retrenching from operational running altogether; I hope I am wrong.

Really ? I seem to recall it working on the Leeds - Aberdeen "North Briton" service before transferring to the WR where it became trainset 252001 to work Paddington - Bristol (Weston Super Mare) services as a prelude to the arrival of the production series.
