I am thinking of booking on this in standard class. Does anyone know if the coaching stock is turned at Edinburgh or can I hope to be nearer the locomotive for the return journey?

Best guess is that the train will be pulled back to Craigentinny Depot so the stock is unlikely to be turned. Best guess is also that a DL will accompany the train to Edinburgh to effect the turn if there is one. The RTC will tell you if you ask..and they know.

I went on the Edinburgh Xmas market more or less the same run to Edinburgh (with a different headboard name) from York on the 8th Dec and if you book standard you will be at the back of the train both ways because they run round the entire train on a triangle somewhere east of Edinburgh station but I booked premier dining and was in coach C 4th from the loco and if you were booked in standard class there was a 47 on the rear of train I can't say if there may be on the Edinburgh flyer on 23rd march I reckon there could be if the diesel was to assist turning the train at Edinburgh station and for extra heat and lighting.

It depends on the start point. At Edinburgh trains have the choice of turning on the triangle at Niddrie or using the Suburban Line to reverse trainsets. Either way the chosen arrangement sees the consist remain in the same direction hence if you're seated at the rear on the outer stage you will be at the rear on the return.

Email from RTC this afternoon. Tour now redated to Easter Saturday 20th April, citing engineering block at Northallerton preventing the return to York on the original date.

I was considering doing this tour again I booked the Bard of Avon with UK Railtours on the 23rd March but I couldn't because of the dates being the same, but when I saw it rescheduled for the 20th April because I enjoyed going on the Edinburgh Xmas market I checked RTC website for reservations but fully booked.

What makes you think that standard will be at the back, it's entirely dependent on how the stock ended up on it's previous run. If an Edinburgh trip that had 1st at the front and was turned at Edinburgh then first would be at the back next time out.

No standard class was at the the back all the way there and back cos the whole train must have been turned on the triangle east of edinburgh station rather than 60009 coming off the train with support coach on its own then standard class would have been at the front. Maybe the 20th april edinburgh flyer may be standard at the front leaving york.

It depends on also which way the carriage stock is facing when its towed down from carnforth depot

Space available .The laws of experience generally favour dining at the front both ways .Being wrong on this occasion would be an excellent result .

11 seats in standard now available, presume some have cancelled due to revised date.

Im not sure wether to do this 1 again cos it was diesel assisted on the previous edinburgh xmas market but i did premier dining that time so i was about 3 coaches away from the kettle but i couldent window hang cos i had a fairly keen steward in our coach everytime i was trying to film telling me to stay seated and if it were standard class on the rear of the train wi a diesel roaring away it would put me off. I think ive had the last rights on 60009 b4 she gets retired on the main line ile let some1 else ave the pleasure of riding behind her b4 she goes 4 good.

Fair point but it's also about making the effort and not treating this Forum like a text messaging service. Without unpacking that, we know that others are able to step up to the plate so.......
