Looking forward to this, going first class for a change so should have no problems hearing the loco working hard.

Just hope it's run like the last one of theirs I travelled on when we were treated to a diesel free trip.

Clearly no loco change northbound, so is that a loco change southbound or just a fill up?

Looking forward to it also, any thoughts on what is gauged for the coast line?

Edit--- looking at the LS moves on the Saturday, that looks like diesel on the back on the WCML and steam unassisted round the coast.

I know that 46100 is gauge friendly for the line, as it’s been before and 46115 is on the line a lot when running

The associated moves with it may mean something to someone and may answer any interest as to whether a diesel is included or not if you can work it all out???

Indeed the headcode numbers suggest the movements the day before and after are associated to the main event.

Possibly it's a backup diesel moving to and from Carlisle in case of failure so something to rescue is nearby?

Oh the amount of speculative fun that could be had with this...are we allowed too though?

I'm just throwing this one out here as being my interpretation of possible events...

5Z17 - Diesel + Steam Loco I + Support (Diesel for Shunt movement with Steam Loco + Support may explain the "5" code) Crewe to Carlisle Holding Siding
    1Z18 - Steam Loco II + Tour
5Z19 - Steam Loco II + Support = Move from Carlisle after tour arrival to Holding Siding
5Z20 - Diesel + ECS from Carlisle to Kingmoor
5Z21 - Diesel + ECS from Kingmoor to Carlisle
5Z22 - Steam Loco I + Support from holding siding to Tour
0Z22 - Diesel from ECS now LE move to Carnforth
1Z22 - Steam Loco I + Tour depart Carlisle to Carnforth via Cumbrian coast.
5Z23 - Steam Loco 1 + Support from Carnforth to Crewe
5Z25 - Steam Loco II + Support - Carlisle Holding Siding to Crewe

Working (5Z23) is the one that I'm not certain about as this would suggest that the tour is not quite as per the advertised tour...the others seem to work out though as being a possibility.

Pure speculation and conjecture on my part though and may not be anywhere close to what actually happens on the day.

UK Steam now says 70000 from Crewe to Carlisle and 45231 back around the coast to Carnforth, which would help to explain the pattern of movements and deal with the gauging issue. @dublo6231 pretty much on the money if so.

Saphos themselves now say this too, so this trip, which they advertised as steam all the way will be class 47 diesel for half the run back.

Still around 250 miles of proper steam haulage with 2 different locomotives for £65 Std or £99 First if booked early, which I imagine most passengers did. Value for money or what?

    Yes, I quite agree.

I just find all these deviations from plan a bit frustrating, and it seems mainly due to gauging issues as far as I can see.

My last Saphos trip was changed, so I didn't get steam up Miles Platting bank as I'd looked forward to. Having said that, it was still superb and as a Brucie Bonus, their first diesel free trip, so yes, all in all, the glass is half full rather than half empty :)

Or indeed whenever you book looking at the Fellsman on 29 May.

Glass 95% full for me for Saturday. Two locos I've never had before. Weather forecast OK. Routed via Park Jct cut-off. The other 5%--- not a great path, two hours 40 Preston to Carlisle. But there you go.

Maybe they originally planned it with the Scot but for whatever reason that's not happening and they've got a Plan B, so fine.

47853 (running as 47614) took 45231 from Crewe to Carlisle Fri.

AFAIK 70000 will work the Lakelander only to Carlisle with 45231 handling the return. 70000 then returns light to Crewe Sun.

70000 calling at Hartford to pick up at 08:24 this morning. I have to say that both locomotive and its train looked superb.

Am I the only one who thinks that the looks of this beautifully turned out train is spoiled by that horrible headboard? It is a very clever, and no doubt costly, design but it just does not fit on the front of a steam loco. Just my opinion.

No you are not Peter. From the very first time I saw a photo of it I have always thought it is an awful design.
