I really can't see the sense in reproducing features that were not in Bulleid's original plan but forced by wartime restrictions, and that turned out to be troublesome enough to justify rebuilding. On the other hand restoring the original appearance, with features that were in Bulleid's original plan, would have much merit. Maybe it's time for some money-where-mouth-is along the lines "I'll contribute £X if you promise to do Y".

Why chain valve gear seems to give little bother in preservation.

We’ve always said we won’t be returning the engine to original specification and will keep some of the better modifications for ease of maintenance such as the rocking fire grate. The valve gear will be what was used in the 50s with maybe a few tweaks.

The glorious thing about the Merchants is so many survived if someone wanted to restore with what Bulleid originally wanted (assuming you don’t go the whole hog and get an 2-8-2) there are plenty of options you could investigate. If someone was serious enough they could approach Riley about 9.

Much as im a believer in Poppet valve gear... it wouldnt be what it says on the tin /spamcan would it...
    Appearance wise ;
we have to bear in mind that the original widows peak didnt work very well at smoke clearing, so we are in the Flying scotsman/ smoker deflectors type debate here... do you look at altering the draughting***to sort that? or punt it round any Universities with a wind tunnel to see if any one wants to re examine the design ? Im happy as long as it has casing over the cylinders which nothing else is carrying these days, even if its the bulbous version that 35011 originally carried, soon as i know thats happening a few quid will be found. What interests me is whether the oil bath can be built better to keep oil in / water out, Heat resistant plastics , better seals, anti spray mats and brushes could have a part to play?

***the answer here should be yes regardless

    Good evening everyone,

Just a quick update to say we’ve confirmed all the arrangements for the move. We have got a company bringing down a 60ton crane to move the J94 boiler and Reid 2 low loaders in order to move the J94s rolling chassis out of the way so we can load GSN. Unfortunately we won’t be able to let anyone know the dates of the move due to limited space at both ends but she should be at Swindon by the end of April.

Thanks again to everyone’s who donated towards the cost it does mean a lot.

It is very good to see the news, in detail, already on the S & C website - that bodes well for a long term positive relationship at your new location. Well done to All concerned in getting this arranged.

It's not been easy, I can assure you. There were a lot of nay sayers a while ago before the official proposal was made, but with the help of a few of my colleagues at the S&CR and the awesome Trustees of the GSN team managed to come up with something that would benefit both the S&CR and GSN society for years to come.

Some pictures of GSN's arrival yesterday. A long slog, but a monumental effort from all involved.

Indeed, well done to all involved. This will mark a turning point in the restoration/reconstruction of this locomotive I'm sure.

Quick question - what is the planed livery?

Apologies if this has already been mentioned earlier in the thread.

Bulleid Purple and Pink. This was the planned livery when they were being designed, but owing to wartime shortages and the inability to secure supplies of the Prince Beetle from Latin America (necessary to produce the purple paint) and the Barbie Bug from Upper Volta (necessary to produce the pink paint) the planned livery did not go ahead. However, the colour charts have been sourced along with Bulleid’s notes and sketches and it is now possible to replicate the colours without recourse to mindlessly crushing up insects.

It will be painted pink with a purple smoke box and special blue lining known veining.

    Options from SEMG:

    - Wartime Black with "SOUTHERN" on tender (Dec 44 - Jan 47)
    - SR malachite, three gold stripes with "SOUTHERN" on tender (Jan 47 - nlt May 49)
    - SR malachite, three gold stripes with "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on tender (nlt May 49 - Nov 51)
    - BR Green (Nov 51 - Jul 59)

Edit: GSN gained the later BR logo (Ferret/Dart board) to replace the Cycling Lion with a cut down tender (see here) sometime after 1957 (see here). For some reason, I thought only '28 had carried the later logo before rebuilding, though the pictures I've seen show '28 with a later logo on a full rave tender.

It appears '11 didn't carry either the BR Express Blue (black white lining) with Cycling Lion, or Deep Blue with Red Lining - but others will have forgotten more than I'll ever know. In any event, there will be plenty of authentic liveries to GSN to choose from, and at least two others that were authentic to other original MNs.

I Don't know off the top of my head what the GSN boys and girls have decided, but IIRC, SR Malachite with gold stripes and "Southern" on the tender was discussed.
