At Carnforth today, 45407 was lit and when 45212 arrived, it and 45407 were turned to face north and coaled... mid morning looked like the 8f had been lit but it could be 44871 which remained facing south, I could be wrong, was there not an occasion when a pilot went half way to the fort.

Due to fire risk, the planned double header of the 5's over the West Highland Line has given way to No. 37518 and 45407 leading, with No. 45212 having run round onto the rear.

I wonder whether there's any protracted and excited discussion on diesel forums about this working ending up with a steam tail-gunner?:)

3 photos near Crianlarich, the summit and horseshoe curve. My first taste of steam on the WHL - pity the weather was poor but it was nice to see the locos.

Thanks Jonathan. How dry is it up there? It's been very dry down south this winter. Footpaths that are usually quagmires this time of year are quite passable. There's lots of new greenery coming through, but heathland areas, such as the New Forest, still have lots of dry bracken, heather and grasses left over from last year.

Just more deadweight for the tractor to pull = more noise = more entertainment.
Diesel to the rescue of kettles again, somethings will never change.
