I'd hope to see her in the original Southern livery with Bulleid numbering (that I don't really understand, but still) and smokebox roundel.

I seem to recall reading some unrebuilt MNs carried BR express blue, which I rather like, so it would be nice to see that too.

For the livery I like a very good dose of rust preventative paint on non moving parts and a cover of grease on moving parts. Spend the money and effort on that and worry about the final coat at the end of the restoration.

Being realistic the groups first job now is to make a start on freeing things up and on fund raising , new members now they have a long term( hopefully) base, the next step has to be to strip 35011 down to its component parts, boiler off, bogie, out driving wheels, out trailing truck etc then the work can begin on overhauling it , designing the new parts needed , following the move, I dare say their funds will have been hit very hard,

How will the problem of it currently being an Atlantic rather than a Pacific be solved?
Sorry if that has already been discussed.

The less facetious answer is that there's a blogpost somewhere detailing the plans but I can't find it.

You are right about the cost for the crank axle too. This will be a very expensive project but much work has already been done and will no doubt continue more quickly now that 35011 is located at a heritage line where the Public will have a chance to view it. There is the matter of a tender to construct as well. 35006 has "been there already and done it."

Thanks for the replies guys. I assume, therefore, that they still have the wheels, which I hadn't realised.

I'm sure the team will correct me if I'm wrong here but I believe from memory that the history of events for No11 are that when withdrawn from service in the 60s, the loco's crank axle was used to keep another locomotive running and was replaced with a non-crank axle from a light pacific for it's drag to Woodhams in Barry. This axle was then taken by the 34046 team for replacing a defective axle on that locomotive when being restored leaving 35011 without. Apologies if I've remembered badly! :)

A big well done and much appreciation for the progress with 35011 to date, one I'm definitely following and supporting best I can.

In part yes, the crank axle was swapped out to keep another MN in traffic, and an plain axle put in for its expected one way trip to the scrap yard, then later, when 34046 failed an ultrasonic on an plain axle, it was swopped again for this replacement axle, As the rebuild plan would need a new crank axle, as the wheel sets were ok, it was decided to have these pressed off the defective axle, and a new crank axle would be forged with the additional fixings to allow the driving cog for the chain driven valve gear, the rebuilds crank axles all are capable of being converted back to original type, this was I believe done so that in the future, as the wheel sets are identical on both the MN, and the lights, a crank axle could be swopped between an rebuilt loco and an original.

Thanks for the clarity martin1656. I would love to know the ID of the loco that donated it's plain axle to 35011 in the first instance to allow passage to Woodhams. A small piece of this locomotive will live on in the reinvented 35011, albeit only two boxpox wheels.

I seem to recall being told that it was 34044 Woolacombe which is was the donor, her leading and crank axle had a a worn/damaged journal around the same time 35011 was withdrawn, 34044 lasted until May 1967.

A couple answers to various questions. livery wise the Society has always said we are going to take a leaf out of the LMS Patriot groups book and just make our members vote for the livery they want to see her in. Although we’ve ruled out BR Blue as we won’t be the loco to wear a scheme she was in service with.

Engineering wise our plan for the coming months is getting the boiler detubed and prepared for the lift. Our focus will then lift to working on the bogie and trailing truck whilst the frames get examined. We also need to help finish constructing the building that will house the locomotive.

The move to Swindon was rather pricey due to a number of factors and cost in the region of £9,000 in total. This reason for this high cost was down to the need of a crane and 2 low loaders to get GSN out of Sellindge. The only way to get her out was to pull her along the track she was on and through the tent and on to a low loader the issue was the J96 and it’s boiler that needed moving out of the way and putting back after the work was carried out. If you’d like to help out the project donations towards the transportation costs can be done through our just giving page link below www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/35011gsn

Think thats all the questions answered.
Thank you all for the positive messages and to those who donated towards the transportation costs.
