What was standard practice on the LMS/LNER? Shouldn't strictly the 5 be on the front or is it this way for aerodynamic reasons or are they expecting snow? ;)

Seriously though, great effort from all concerned to get 60009 repaired on the trackside, back to Carnforth and prepped for a long day today! :)

On the NBR section the pilot loco would be coupled inside but IIRC elsewhere on the LNER the pilot loco would be coupled in front. Howerber this train is currently running on the old LNWR so who knows what rules apply. I suspect the 5 is there just to give the A4 a half decent load to haul.:)

I'm puzzled. Where was the stock berthed overnight? And where do the locos turn to point north again?

Note red light, that is the rear of the consist!

I assume it overnighted at base in Carnforth

The NBR rule was that the loco with the most carrying wheels was put on the front, the GW coupled the pilot inside as their rule was that the train engine driver should always be in charge of the brake. This rule seems to have gone out of the window on the Devon banks on a summer Saturday if you look at the photographic evidence. Did it not occur to anyone that it would be a lot simpler for the crews to swap footplates? The Midland, LNER and Southern constituents did the sensible thing and put the pilot on the front.

What, the crew of a mighty King take over a mere 4100 just for a few miles of hills? That's just not cricket Sir! :)

Had the ECS been hauled to Preston by steam the locos could have turned on the Farington Jn - Lostock Hall Jn-Farington Curve Jn triangle but obviously much easier with a diesel.

Anyone know who the crews are? Seems that the shap performance was a good one.

And 58 at Grayrigg I am told. So a few mph quicker than the last doubleheader at both points with the same drivers I think. Nice and consistent then.
