I was going to say, make sure you view the photos of Compound 1000 and Leander before making your decision! Mind you, not sure the climate is quite what it was nearly forty years ago. And it is certainly dry up there at the moment, more like June than April under foot.

Whilst watching a YT video taken at a visit to the Internal Fire Museum at Tanygroes I saw what I thought was a Deltic engine; indeed, one of the commenters remarked as much. How many of these engines survive? I recall there being one at the Anson Engine Museum in Cheshire?

Anyone know the cylinder bore and piston stroke of a Deltic engine? Never come across them in my reading.

The specifications for the 18-cylinder Deltic diesel engines are interesting, to say the least. They had a bore of 5.125 inches, and each piston stroke was a lengthy 7.25 inches. With a total displacement of 5,384 inches or 88.3 liters (that’s about 13 times the size of a Cummins 6.7), the 18-cylinder Deltic has a compression ratio of 19.26:1, and produces 2,500 hp at 2,000 rpm. It measures 6 feet, 2.5 inches in width, is 7 feet, 1 inch tall, and has an overall length of 10 feet, 11 inches. The dry weight of the Deltic 18-cylinder comes in at 8,727 pounds.

These figures are for the marine version of the engine.

And remember the New York Super Pumper engine that developed 5000bhp, get 2 of those in Alycidon, and give a TGV a run for its money!!!

Thanks for that info, Victor. The rail traction version is 1650 bhp @ 1500 RPM, I presume the marine (Royal Navy) 2500 BHP @ 2000RPM is a 'combat' rating. A bit surprised at the high compression ratio, would have expected it to have been more like 15 : 1.

There is a book by Bryan (Bob) Boyle, 'The Napier Way', ISBN 1-870519-57-4, possibly obtainable from The Napier Trust, that gives an insight into the development, although it seems that pistons were a problem. Don't know if they ever got that one resolved, though.

I've often wondered where EE got the Deltic warning horns from, to my ears they sound like a flatulent duck.
Now a set of horns from a heavy haulage American diesel loco. would (IMO;)) be just right. Middle road non stop through Doncaster with the Napiers and the horns.............that would grab attention.:)

    You're dreaming again Victor:(
