There is no crossover at Hellifield South Junction to allow a northbound train to use the up platform so once the charter was in the down platform, the service train was stuck behind it. Options might have been to send the dmu via the loop if the problem was cleared as in the previous post, or to shunt the charter (with its original diesels front and rear) to the Blackburn line or possibly to the up main. The former option would have meant missing the Hellifield stop which would perhaps have been a minor inconvenience. The latter would require points to have been clipped unless all passengers alighted from the charter - you can't operate passenger trains over unlocked facing points. No decision was ideal but with that wonderful thing called hindsight, one feels it would have been better to let the service train get past by some means or other.

Yes isn't hindsight wonderful, but someone other than the signaller must have made the decision so I guess the crew did what they were told to do.

So despite the speculation up thread this was an operational issue, not a dispute over water supply?

I think David uses a Garmin, but I'm sure he'll confirm. I load the gpx file into an application that's intended for cycling/running, (which I use for that purpose too) but it serves the same job. It gives you all the necessary data on a map for specific points; speed, time. I take sample values from the nearest half mile post. It could have more samples, but decided half mile is enough and I also have some traditionally collected data by Mike Notley which consistently uses the same distance posts, so have kept with that. David also gives me his exact pass times for the start and exit of the displayed section to get a more accurate position to start from and total duration. The data goes into a spreadsheet, which is read by the web site and plotted onto the graph.

ps: GPS logs from other timers very welcome!

Thanks Ian. Must try downloading from mine. So used to recording times and speeds on a pre-prepared spreadsheet I've never got around to using the data off the GPS. Mine's a Garmin. I always have the pass times on and off sections so might give it a try.
