The 94xx locos were also heavier than the 5700s,and they were red route restriction.

The first 57XX went to LT in 1956 and the first 94XX withdrawals didn't start till 1959. You could probably cascade the 94XX onto duties performed by the earlier panniers as they were withdrawn. Not exactly an easy thing to do with the Class 14's, though.

If you look at the cab on the 94xxs it is higher and wider, you'll notice slim the LT panniers are 57xxs and not the mechanically identical 8750s for the same reason.
Even with the smaller cab, the cab roof overhang, fireman's grab rail and I think the rain strips still all needed altering or removing.
They were offered something off the Eastrrn region too, but these were declined as modifying the Matchboxes was easier.

I knew Gordon Wells (I assume it's the same chap) when we were both members of the Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club (7.25 gauge live steam section). He also had a traction engine which I remember helping with at local steam rallies a couple of times. Good times. :D
