I think in this case the NRM is correct in having a sectioned locomotive and, given the number of MNs that there are in existence, this is the best use for it. Pause for onslaught!

At the time, it was not expected that any more MN would be saved and the rebuilt MN was with the exception of 71000 the most modern pacific type available, so whilst I don't agree with 35029 being sectioned, at the time, it was either as a static exhibit, or be cut up.

It's a shame it has been forgotten as it's a genuine ex LNER machine.

It's not been forgotten. It is under overhaul! It's just that those involved all have commitments elsewhere, including these annoying things called jobs!

Now that 9F number 92134 has made it back into working order as 152nd engine from Woodhams in Barry, what do people think will be the next engines to return to working order. These are those I believe to be good candidates suitably advanced in their restoration :
    GWR - 6984 Owsden Hall (S&CR) , 4150 (SVR) , 3814, 5532 (Both Llangollen)
    Southern - 30499 (MHR)
    LMS - 45491 (GCR)

GWR 7927 Willington Hall has it's boiler in 6880 Betton Grange so also gets a mention :)

    Thoughts and best runners?

4150: The boiler has been in the boiler shop since late last year, meaning 4150 is officially in the SVR overhaul queue with a reasonably predictable path to completion. The boiler overhaul is progressing well, while work continues on the bottom end at Bewdley. The most recent 4150 Fund update (August) is here. http://www.4150.org.uk/news/4150_aug19.html

Completion? From the Engineering Services Manager’s report in SVR News Summer 2019 edition "4144 – A visitor that is proving a very useful engine. We are all looking forward to the launch of our own 4150 (next year?)". Personally I think 2021 may be more likely than "next year?", but I would love to be proved wrong.

    Sounds good.
2019 will have been a very good year for new restorations with 4942 as 2999, 6989, 80097 and now 92134

4150 shouldn't be far off nor 6880, but I think there may be a somewhat longer wait for 499. (Can't speak for 45491 or the other GWR locos)

499 is a good example of a Barry loco owned by an individual or group in whom one can have considerable confidence that the job will be done - after all, look at 506. However, all the engineering and fundraising skills in the world can't alter the fact that any Barry restoration these days is a going to be long slog - lots of new parts to be made, lots of old parts to clean up, and so on. Just look at the ULS's website and the scale of the task becomes apparent. I think we can rule out 2020, much as a return to steam would be the best possible way to mark its centenary. I wouldn't be surprised to see 75079 in steam first.

Point of order, Mr Speaker: 80097 was 2018.

Indeed so - my bad. It may be that 2999 was also 2018 but formally launched in 2019?

Absolutely - I certainly wouldn't underestimate the size of the task in returning 499 or any other loco to running order.
75079 is a good candidate, I would agree

I would add 4253, but I think the Bedouins at Rolvenden are probably another year off finishing....

Rather more than that judging by the items yet to cross off their task list... http://www.4253.co.uk/Engineering_Timeline/

Jim, their biggest task remaining is updating that list! Afraid that the list isn't up to date, and hasn't been for a while.

Having seen a recent update by Batt Holden Ltd (albeit about the other loco's within the owning group), it can't be too long before 48173 is on the horizon for a return to steam either? Unlikely in the next 12 months admittedly, but perhaps in 2-3 years time?

Also I've been pleased to see the good progress being made on 44123, it may still be in the early stages of it's restoration, but the work being carried out certainly looks to be of a very high standard.
