He drove the first train into Carrog, and opened the extension (about 12 years ago)...

Fault with the Piston Ring. RA & FC possibly knows more as he was the one who told me on saturday.

Erm yeh... The 4F was making a grinding sort of noise from the left hand cylinder on saturday 25th October, on the first trip back from Carrog so we decided to fail it. Not exactly sure what is wrong with it but the CME had a look over it the day after. Last weekend it was sat in the shed with the cylinder cover off... It may quite possibly be the piston rings, either having broken up, or in the process of...

But that is just my guess anyway.

I gather that you are not impressed with the engine? Or is it really a good strong reliable engine?

Fantastic engine when you get the firing right, bit of a pain when it isn't. They apparently always had a reputation of being poor steemers on occasions. Check out:

    http://www.4123.co.uk/Drawings/Notes%20 ... %204Fs.doc

After a few of Llangollens firemen having trouble with the engine, I found this and put it into practise, and it works...

On the mechanical side of the loco the pistons and valves need a bit of looking at! As described before, we had to fail the loco due to wierd noises coming from one cylinder. Another problem is the valve timeings. After notching up the reverser, it tends to drop a beat...

Agree with you there. Personally still to have a bad day on her, though I m only a cleaner. One of my best turns was on 44422 with NatPres' very own RA & FC and Flying Fiver. Th 4F flew up Berwyn and she just wanted to go and go all day practically.

Yep, get the fire right and a good draught through it and it will go.

I fired it a quite few times the first time the engine visited the railway in the 90's. Seemed to steam quite freely despite the reputation of 4Fs being a poor steamer. In fact the harder it worked the more it produced steam!!!

Seems the same this time on the firing side, just load it in the back and let the pull of the exhaust do the rest. However the valve timing does seem to be out and does drop a beat when notching back and the exhaust seems to be more of a wheeze instead of a good derby bark, maybe it is down to failing piston rings. I'm sure she will be sorted soon and back out on the Santas

    Just a quick update:
Both Jessy and 3802 have had there wheels removed and taken down to the South Devon Railway. Jessy i think is getting new tyres but i am unsure as to what is being done on the 38.

    Till the Jinty is fixed.

3802 is having some boiler work done and I believe the wheels have gone away for tyre repairs.
