The Middleton Railway sometimes runs mixed trains. I hope to do this maybe once more this year and several times next year. Its nice to see some of the freight stock being used and also nice for the people involved in that work to see there things in use. On a mixed train day we let passengers ride in weither the carriage or the brakevan. Its amazing how many people choose the latter..

Interesting thread. I remember the Fort Bil mixed running, with loaded fuel tanks. About 10 years ago on the Avon Valley Railway we ran some mixed trains at one of our gala's - fully treated (and signalled as) as a local paseenger train - with a mark 1 coach conveying passengers, a vac braked dogfish, tube wagon, lowmac and a GWR toad.

Provided the train is fully braked, there is no reason why a mixed could not run on the national network these days.

We did this for one of the Bluebell "Summer Steam Galas" (remember them?). As the first train of the day is always lightly loaded, but the light is best for the photters, we timetabled the Standard 5 on a rake of fitted vans with a lone Bulleid brake on the back.

Needless to say it tipped it down with rain and I've never seen a photo of it.

There are countries that still run mixed trains, at least 30 wagons of various types then half a dozen coaches.

    Looks almost strategic reserve like...

The WLLR have run mixed trains in the past, and I think - ready to stand corrected - that the freight portion, at the rear of the train, was unfitted.
