73096 was also passed to 75, it is the wheel diameter, not number of cylinders, or at least that's how it was. as I understand anything over 6 ft but before anyone says it , this I don't think would allow the Stirling single or even something like Hardwick to pilot 60103 on its next run ;)

As I know it it’s as follows:

Above 6’2” 75mph (max for uk steam (Tornado excepted as far as I know?))

    Somewhere around 5ft-6’1” 60mph

Below 5” have 35mph-45mph restrictions except for 48151 that has a 50mph limit

Then different power outputs leads to different “timed for ‘x’mph” on the national network:

Class 6-8 can be timed for 75mph
Class 4-5 can be timed for 60mph
Lower classes timed for speeds capable

Light engine moves/and coach moves usually limited to 50mph due to braking abilities yet usually timed for 60mph on RTT

Tender first runs vary from 35-45mph dependant on loco.

I understand that while specific locos are usually advertised on services/tours that for example are capable of 75mph running it’s common to see “timed for 60mph” on RTT. When submitting tour requests a number of locos can be nominated for running and NR time it for the lowest speed capable loco put forward and hence we see the lower times advertised on RTT.

I’m not an expert by any means of mainline steam operations and only go by the research I’ve done and talks with various members I come across on outings so this is by no means gospel, but should give some well established guidance...

It’s been a long day so if anyone cares to tidy up my explanation or advise otherwise please do so. That’s my understanding of it anyway.

There's no point in timing a 75mph loco at 75 as it would be impossible to average that speed, so the timings would be at 60mph, and correspondingly lower for those limited to 60.

86259’s involvement in the WCME is a good example of this. The electric sections are timed for 100mph. Despite what the max speed says above (caused by a glitch leaving Colwich Tunnel), speed was often around the 90-93mph mark and I think the max knocked 98 in reality. Yet we very comfortably stuck to the schedule and ran ahead on multiple occasions. Average speed as stated was 65mph, timed for 100mph.

These times are “Max” not “Target”.

The Scarborough - Ealing Broadway train which would bring 35018 to the South has been removed from the RYTC web site, so who knows?
West Coast will probably use this "Q" path -
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P95042/2019/05/29/advanced
on a date to be decided considering train crew availability.

    Cheers, Neil

Carnforth might be keeping it quite because of trouble with protesters ( From Dewsbury) picketing the Junction with NR Protesting about their engine going back down South , and other problems to do with Southern protesters picketing Southall when its time to send it back up North :):)

Regularly see WCR locos and carriages around Rugby or Northampton on my Friday evening LNWR commute based on the timings shown, so would be an obvious path, time obviously varies due to extensive passenger and freight in that area.

Well, it made its way down South, ok, ran its first passenger train on Southern metals since 1964 and did so in fine style , and Carnforth turned her out in spotless condition, every bit as good as Clan line is when she runs, so clearly a matter of pride evident in those looking after her. its a shame she is only scheduled to run two tours, especially as 6201 is now back, so could have had a few runs her self, on tours from 10a that might have been earmarked for BIL.
I would have hoped that the 9th would have seen both Merchant navies out on the same day at the head of tours, that might have seen both passing each other en route, and scheduled to Arrive at Victoria at the same time in the evening, Maybe next year?

Clan line is out on tomorrow, it’s operation is dependent to a large extent on what Belmond’s operations are

I've been hauled by Hardwicke piloting Evening Star. That was back in 1976 though so nothing was passed for 75 back then, no matter what wheel diameter.
