I'm pretty sure the 50 was bringing the 31 down from the SVR so as it's too heavy to do anything I doubt that will show

Good news about the extra 25 coming

The 73's are mainline ones so I suspect they will be coming from Eastleigh?

For a railway that supposedly has no money, there seems to be plenty available to cover all sorts of locomotive moves that must be somewhat marginal in terms of additional revenue.

Is that just a dig at having diesels or does that apply to visiting steam as well??

No dig whatsoever. If the sums expended on all traction moves since the 'crisis' was announced then this, assuming that commercial rates (as opposed to 'mates' rates) were used then this would amount to a high five (if not six) figure amount spent on moves alone- let alone running fees etc and therefore a massive amount to be recovered before any benefit was gained.
Whether this is on diesel or steam (which on most heritage railways are differing but extremely fickle markets) is irrelevant. I would have thought that this is an extreme gamble as opposed to fixing the absolute basics, which given the public announcements from the various factions of the WSR and the 977 pages thus far on this site suggest that there is very little cash available in the pot for such a gamble.

Whilst you note the possibility of "mates rates" there is also the possibility that some one / people have put their hands in their pocket to fund the event at reduced cost to the WSR. That, however, is commercially confidential and I must confess that this highlights a problem that is beginning to cause concern to this "lineside observer" - the need for many to know every detail of every decision made on the WSR. The heading of this thread is West Somerset Railway Operations - with emphasis on Operations - hence my expectation to find details of locomotive availability, train diagramming, staffing etc but not the minutae of policy that is the remit of the Board of Directors as voted for by WSR Members. The recent problems with the BoD, which were detailed in this thread during the battle over the Ex-6 and were regularly chronicled in this thread, was a possible exception given the nature and level of concern but there is now a new BoD which should be allowed to get on with the task of 'directing" the future course of the WSR.

The new chairman has been prepared to give a fair amount of publicity to the current tranche of problems highlighted by the ORR and all credit fr so doing butI feel it time to allow the BoD to direct, the membership to inter-act outside this thread and for the thread to return to its primary function of keeping potential visitors informed about what the railway is doing to provide the locomotives and services that will attract them to Somerset in general and the WSR in particular.

Am I wrong to wish to see the politics kept out of the public forum ?

That’s perfectly justified, but @Springs Branch gave voice to something that certainly crossed my mind when a replacement for “97205” was announced - at what cost?

That’s not so much a political question as one about how the costs of mounting a gala like this sit against the extra income it will bring in and the overall financial position of the railway.
