The first visitor for the 2019 Legends of Industry gala at the Tanfield Railway has just been announced ...

Great Western Raway No. 813 will be returning to the North East as Backworth Colliery No. 12 in the condition it first arrived in Northumberland during 1934.

Expect further announcements on visiting locos in the next few days.

I've been to a couple of these events over recent years and they are brilliant. Last year I attended the Friday evening photo shot 6-10pm cost me a tenner on the gate. I'll have a look and perhaps chase up some of my photos....

GALA NEWS! Seaham Harbour Dock Co. No.18 'Lewin' will be joining us for our Legends of Industry Gala, 14th - 16th June courtesy of Beamish Museum!

So far we’ve announced Great Western No. 813, a veteran of the Welsh coalfield as well as our own, and Seaham Harbour No. 18 which was built way down in the south of England at Poole in Dorset. So that’s England and Wales taken care of ... wonder what’s next?

The prospect of Lewin visiting from just down the road at Beamish, reminds me of a practice at I believe Shotton Colliery and another in Durham. where a steamer was transferred from one to the other using a couple of short track panels. The loco would be driven onto the first, then the second panel was placed in front of it and then the loco would move forward, with the first being moved to the front and the loco moving forward again until they arrived at the other colliery. So would they/could they do the same with Lewin........

Seriously one thing I find interesting with Lewin is that the valve gear is outside of the frames immediately behind the wheels. Which as I remarked to one of the staff at Beamish, must have made it devilishly difficult to oil round

The Borrows well tanks have the valve gear between the wheels and frame. I can't comment on Lewin but the Borrows locos were dead easy to oil up. Much easier than going between to do so.

OK thanks Steve. I'll take your word, it just struck me as a bit odd/unusual.

As has been said Lewin isn't too bad. It just involves sitting in a puddle. It's a very straight forward engine. Plus if you do need to go between, it has masses of space since it was built as a well tank.

Who said that there was anything bad about Lewin? I remarked that I found it interesting [not to mention odd, come to think of it] that the valve gear was outside behind the wheels rather than inside between the frames. Making it difficult IMO to oil round.....

I had planned to make a visit to this years event, but for various reason I didn't unfortunately. Roll on next years...................
