Any news on how fast it went?

Given that it was a 75mph test run, I'd guess at 82 1/2 or there abouts...

 

I wonder........

 

General inquiry.. How would that be worked out?

 

Speed Distance Time

 

200 metres of train, taking say, 6 seconds to pass, is a little under 75mph...

 

I was hopeing that someone on the train might have been able to give us an answer from a GPS.
I understand that there was something very special on last nights train.Not the fastest ever but the quickest from start to stop.Can anyone confirm?

 

In the Northern Echo Video there is a guy with a lap top recording several different things including the speed which I think says 75 while they were filming the screen: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/video/regional/61128/.

 

She was on a 75 mph test run so the fastest she would have gone is 75+10%=82.5 mph.
We'll just have to be satisfied with that. :smt002 After all speeding on the railway is frowned upon by the powers that be and that is why you sometimes see the little men with radar guns on the lineside.

 

Right then, thinking caps on a moment, know one in there right mind is going to confirm speeds because of the implications for the futurue decisions regarding the potential 90mph testing. The other consideration is that this was a test of the loco and as such an inspector was on board to officiate and make sure everything was fine. I do know what speed was ahcieved however it is neither right nor proper that i disclose it on this forum for the reasons above. Be satisfied that she did very well and has succesfully got this far and will continue to be a beacon for the preservation movement as a whole.

With the greatest of respect you'd have been better saying nothing. By saying that you know what speed was achieved but it's neither right nor proper to disclose it is going to fuel wide speculation that it was well in excess of the 75 + 10%. After all if it was within permitted limits you would have told us wouldn't you? :smt002

 

Goodness me! It brought a tear to my eye just watching footage on You Tube. Heaven knows what it must have been like not only seeing her race through the likes of Northallerton but also arriving at Newcastle.

It really is time to pinch ourselves. 2008.UK. Brand new steam locomotive on the mainline running at 75mph and hopefully higher later.

The UK built the first steam locomotive and it is highly probable that it has built the last.

We should be very proud of the Tornado team for doing something that most sane individuals would have thought impossible.The birth of an A1.

I started train spotting in 1960, the year of the last BR built loco, Evening Star and 48 years later, I have witnessed something that I could never have dreamed of back then.

All of those years ago, we used to chalk things on engines in the 60's, typically "Steam Forever" and "Steam Supreme", etc.

My God it has happened! Steam is back. And new steam to boot!

Does anyone know when the assessment for 90mph running will be made? Are they going to allow a test run at 90mph?
If so, then I will leave leafy Berkshire to witness what would be a magnificent event!

Put it this way, work in progress.

Bear in mind freight trains are only permitted to run at 60 mph and here you have something heavier than any freight loco that they want to run at 90. What does work in the A1's favour however is that it's not exactly going to be happening every day on every route...watch this space.

 

Good to hear that the 90 mph thing is still on the table.As long as it gets approval where the line speed is better than 115mph and the timings issued allow for 90mph I for one will be a very happy bunny.

Just imagine it. A 90mph test run is booked and to get its ticket it needs to do 90 + 10%. I'll leave you to do the maths. :smt002
