I defy anyone to tell me we absolutely, definitely, 100% needed yet another GWR Hall in railway preservation after you look at that completed Saint with the full paint job applied.

    Magnificent!

That sounds like a challenge to me Simon, so I looked at @Paul42 's first image and what do I see - a pair of GWR Halls! OK the leading one has a more elaborate paint job and a smaller tender, but there is no getting away from the fact that all GW 4-6-0s still look very much the same. If its looks you're after it would have been much easier to restore 4942 as it was, pair it with a small tender and paint it accordingly! Is that defiant enough for you?

Seriously though the guys involved have done a superb job and can be justifiably proud of the end product.

Some parts of 2999 are the same as a Hall. That's what made the project practicable.
Some parts of 2999 are not the same as a Hall. That's what made the project worthwhile.

Not entirely 2999 based, but this seemed the best place to put this.

Rather niche question, but were the 29xx (and possibly other Churchward locomotives) later retrofitted with screw reversers to replace the lever one, never seen it mentioned before but a book I am presently reading suggests that they were?

The 'Saints' 2911-30 and 'Courts' 2931-55 were built with screw reversers. The 'Ladies' had lever reverse.

Thanks for that, you learn something new every day. Seems funny that loco's like the 28's and 47's were not given the screw with it being somewhat easier to adjust on the move?

A lot easier, I’m not sure it could be done with steam in the circuit. On terminology I’m sure the GW called it a pole reverser
