    Ha Ha!

As some may know I have been away in Edinburgh for a case for the last 5 weeks and obviously not keeping up!

I love the concept of replacing a tank, frames, and tyres of a tender. A bit like the old joke about the tramp who approaches a house and asks the lady of the house is she wouldn’t mind ‘sewing a coat on to this button...’

    Thanks.

    Robin

Broom heads and handles, and 53808's tender.

The tender presently in use with the S&D 2-8-0 53808 has, as far as I know, an interesting design history.

It apparently started off as a Johnson [Edit - not Deeley] design with an 8 wheeled bogie chassis. After a period the original tank was retained but the chassis was replaced with the 6 wheel Deeley design that exists today. Later on again the original Johnson tank presumeably gave up the unequal struggle against corrosion and had to be replaced, this time with a standard Fowler tank. The standard Fowler tank is shorter than the original Johnson design by some 10" and so the locomotive today has a very useful platform at the back for crews to walk on when changing the lamp. So what we have today is the original tender with none of the original components except the buffers!

When it comes to wheels things become even more interesting for the serious (but perhaps sad?) wheel design gricer. The tender has 3 wheelsets each of different design. One is a late pattern Stanier design with triangular section rim. One is older and originally had riveted on tyres. The last is older still and has wheel castings for tyres held on with screwed in studs.

    Andy.

A great post (in some ways better than mine), this one made a number of important points.

A quick follow-up to the last above; as I mentioned, in the financial world, there are people called 'stock analysts' or 'investment analysts', whose job is to look at the details of a business, to give another view of whether management is making the right choices. They are often not stockholders; in fact, many are often forbidden to hold stock in companies they cover, as that could be a potential conflict of interest. Nevertheless, they are given extreme access to internal information; management often hold special conference calls with analysts where they can ask anything they like.

Think of NatPres as 'crowd-sourced line analysts'. They have a positive role to play, just like stock analysts do for real (in an economic, not legal sense) companies.

There is a slight difference in that, over a considerable period of time, analysts have to earn their reputation as experts in their chosen sectors. Maybe some NP contributors have done that but ....

Perhaps a more apt comparison is with focus groups- made up of a random selection of people with or without expertise but their value is giving the client a better idea of what the ‘general public’ think about the chosen topic. We are, as railway enthusiasts of course, a rather unique subset of the GP.

That's an easy one. 7828 is in BR pre 1956 green livery with the older BR crest whereas 7802 is in post 1956 green livery with the later style crest. Both are correct.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. 7802 is correct but 7828 was B.R. built and turned out in lined mixed traffic black. As the Manors only started to be repainted in lined green from 1956 it would be unusual (but not impossible) for a lined green Manor to have received the old crest. It wasn't unknown for old crests being 'used up' post 1956 (Horwich was still using them through 1957) but I'd like to see a dated photo of 7828 in that livery before stating that it was "correct". As regards the differing shades of green the jury is still out on that one. Some swear that there were 2 distinct shades but I've not sen any B.R. spec other than 'Passenger Loco Green' which was the old GWR Middle Chrome Green. I think the variation is more likely to be the result of using paint from two different manufacturers. Just my 2p worth.

I remember 7828 when it was first restored, when it moved to Llangollen it was clearly in a different shade of BR green to 7822 back in the 80’s. I heard it was nicknamed “odd bod” because of the shade of green....

Subsequent to my previous post I went on a 'Manor photo hunt' and after an extensive trawl found good colour photos of just 2 Manors in lined green with the old (small size) 'cycling lion' crest. One was 7801 @ Aberystwyth 22/12/58 and the other was, indeed, 7828 @ Salop 9/56. So the WSR did get this unusual livery combination correct even though it must have been short-lived as, by 1959, 7828 had been repainted and the 'ferret & dartboard' crest applied.

I don't know about anyone else, but I do find that when I am annoyed by someone I disagree with, in a situation where it is important to build relationships and get people behind my point of view, then by far the best way to show graceful tact, charm and diplomacy is to accuse them of being "moany" and "angry" and complain that they haven't given me any money.

I regard the PLC web site as a tool for potential passengers not supporters. Steve's wsr.org.uk is The Web Site for supporters. There was an article in Rail a few weeks ago a few weeks ago.

I may be down for the diesel gala if it's in operation by then. The breakfast train is nicely timed to miss the bus connection so if the shuttle makes the connection I'll be there.

We have a residents' association near us which is run by a bunch of self-entitled snobs. It's quite amusing watching from afar as their antics have the opposite effect of their intent or delaying their aims or put people to a lot of unnecessary trouble.

I agree that graceful tact, charm and diplomacy is the way to go but unfortunately some people respond badly to even that.
