Better still - why not convert the vehicle portion into accommodation for homeless people then use the engines to establish communal power stations generating power for the "community" of rail buses. There is already a homeless community in London using redundant containers so why not expand by using redundant Pacers.

I’m going to put in a proposal to buy a fleet of them and convert them to buses ...

Maybe I could then hire them out to Northern Rail for when they need to put on a rail replacement bus service.

I've never owned a bus or a railway vehicle, have no facilities or equipment for repairs, capital reserves available for the project limited to £1.53 held in a secret account (*). On the positive, I do know how to copy and paste the website terms and conditions from my local Pizza delivery firm.

Chris Grayling says my proposal is an excellent one and he has promised £13.8m in funding ...

You'll get one for £1.53...............get a bid in Tom, we'll have a 'jolly boys' and we'll all come and watch it burn.

P.S. Unfortunately we won't be able to re-imburse the £1.53

Apologies - I hadn't realised that was the case (should I have seen it announced somewhere?) and only just spotted this as the alert got buried while I was offline for a few days. It won't happen again...

Edit: I went and re-read the forum rules - there's not exactly an obvious explicit ban on this unless I've missed it - although I can see that it probably falls under the following:
    1. Be likely to deceive any person.
    2. Be likely to harass, upset, embarrass, alarm or annoy any other person. Impersonate any person, or misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any person.
Anyway, apologies for thread drift. Pacers are still exceedingly uncomfortable :)

I actually like Pacers a bit. I much prefer them to the poxy Metrolink trams which GMPTE imposed on the Manchester to Bury, Altrincham and Oldham/Rochdale lines

Tbh I think it's a admirable cause. They saved many lightly used lines. And some examples do need to be saved. It is history. Once it's gone it's gone.

Agree. They have been a part of the railway for a long time and probably saved a lot of lines from closure as they were cheap to run and build. I remember about 35 or so years ago people not liking first generation DMUs but they are now an accepted part of railway preservation.

    Bugga and damnation.
Now, some while ago a government rail minister stood at the despatch box in the H of C ans said that the Pacers would be gone by the end of 2019. It's not going to happen, a top man from Northern was on local Tv last evening and said it won't happen, the Pacers will live on, they haven't finalised the plans yet. Oh joy.
It's a mystery how Northern Rail manage to retain that franchise because the impression is that they couldn't organise a social event in a brewery.
