I am just reading the Latest Joint Line and the leaflet about the Reedham Junction signal box coming to Holt station.

This is amazing news. So tempting to release the money saved towards the next overhauls and spend it on something else, a new build M&GN 50 (is that boiler still available?), fast-track some of the JHCF coaches, go for a GER AND an M&GN vintage coaches rake, a carriage museum etc...or...buy some rental property and use the income to pay for overhaul of one of the locos or 1/4 orf all of them in perpetuity. A luxury problem, making that decision!

I’d sooner see the money currently saved for overhauls kept in the kitty for when the million is used up.

It’s a vast sum of money, but when steam locomotives are involved money seems to disappear fairly quickly.

I would imagine, though I’m not an expert on these things, the million will stand the 4 society steam locomotives in good stead for their next major overhauls. But it would be great if the next round of overhauls after that, ten or twenty years down the line, have all the funds needed as money is still coming in now from membership fees, more donations etc.

And of course there is the diesel fleet, carriages and wagons, proposed Holt exhibition shed and goodness knows what else.

And if 43106 or a B1 ever came on the market (pure WIBN ).

A very generous donation in the supporters will, but at least it will provide for the home fleet for the next 10 to 20 years.

With all the funds in place, and the NNR engineering facilities now capable of completing full overhauls on site, I wonder how quickly the B12’s next overhaul could be completed?

They could even sponsor the V2 overhaul in exchange for a long term loan deal.

    The post from @Hicks19862 said:

Latest Joint Line has revealed that the M&GN Society has been left around a million pounds in the will of a supporter, with the condition that it is used for the repair/overhaul of the society’s steam fleet.

    (My emphasis)

So I would suggest that it explicitly wouldn’t allow what you suggest.

assuming they have money invested from steamings etc, this hypothecated money could free up that money to do whatever the society fancies....I'm not suggesting that would be anywhere hear as much

I can't see that restoring the V2 would be anything but a vanity project for the NNR - it is too big fordaily services. They would be better waiting for something in the class 4-5 power range to become available - how about taking a majority stake in the Sandringham project?

I think if the NNR should make a bid to restore an NRM locomotive, it should be the J17.

    Anyway, apologies, Just more WIBN

IMO this wind fall should be used to invest in such things a workshops, stock sheds [acquiring the necessary land if need be first] and other facilities and infrastructure. Before spending any on anything not directly owned by the line. OK affiliated group assets with the cravat that said item should/must say at Sheringham for a set amount of time, OK the occasional visit to other lines would be permissible during the agreed period.

I would point out that the legacy has been left to the M&GN society and not the NNR. Whilst they work very closely they are separate organisations.

Great to see many with burning holes in their pockets. :D:D
As treasurer of an organisation I am always reluctant to crow too loudly about legacies and windfalls. One or two make sensible suggestions (providing their is no restriction clauses), most get carried away suggesting all sorts of implausible expenditure. ;)
Anyway good news for the M&GN Society.

At least we know the B12, Y14, WD and Wissington have a rosy future for the next ten to twenty years at least

Scarcely my decision of course, but didn't the OP mention a condition that the legacy be used for funding loco overhauls and rebuilds? Although it strikes me as an interesting notion, surely funding the newbuild B17 falls outside that remit?
