I'm puzzled, I thought usually the cliche was about an eastern area of Southern england.

So it seems: and I thought they were merely associated with leaving unreliable persons to mind the baking.

From the latest Mikado Messenger: "Some of the potential suppliers excluded themselves due to the size and scale of the project to provide just one diagram 118a boiler." And then the Trust ordered two. Might those potential suppliers be a bit miffed?

I took that to mean "they would struggle to provide one in the specified timeframe, let alone two, so politely declined"

    I agree with that interpretation.

It stands to reason that if you can make one to spec/commercial requirements you can do 2!

Thank you; that indeed would make better sense than the way I had read it.

Very quiet in here of late...

Watching the below 12min 30 ish there is some interesting footage of 60502 Earl Marischal, but surely that is not from the 60's.....? Anyone have any ideas?

Fascinating stuff, especially the 'streamliner' twin set in pre-war blue behind 60502...so late 1940's?

What a combination. LNER apple green with BR number and pulling an ex-Coronation twin set, still in blue, but minus valances, in a train of teak coaches.

    Beautiful stuff!

Also notice the small slip - like all Pacifics - and the driver controlling it well.

Must be 1948 or 1949. What a wonderfully odd and beautiful pairing.

Depends on whether the banker has been renumbered or not, freeze frame indistinctive for me but number looks LNER, train formation suggests late summer 1948.

60502 is the British Railways number, given to the LNER classes by adding 60,000 to their existing numbers, in 1948. The style is LNER (because that’s what was available at the time) but the number is British Railways.

LNER remained on the tender no doubt for expediency.

I don’t think @garth manor is disagreeing with you, just narrowing it down further based on the number / livery of the banking engjne that is fleetingly seen at the end of the shot. That loco appears to me to still be in LNER livery and number as 2269.

Ah! You see I initially thought he miswrote tender as bunker. Completely missed the banking engine.

Agree with you both that it’s early BR days and LNER liveries are still extant.
