Bristol TM to Weymouth with Saphos

Ha! No-one listens when I grumble about the stock . . . there are no nice green SR ones around now, just some Chocolate and Cream or Maroon junk . . . AND that crappy mark 2 stuff.

As we know Saphos is running rail tours this summer from Bristol with a diesel tucked in behind the tender. It's ironic that a year ago today the same company ran a train from Bristol to Kingswear behind Braunton with a diesel tucked in behind the tender. Other TOCs ran tours in the same formation throughout July. The reason of course was fire risk. <BJ>

 

Is that just Weymouth tours?

Rubbish. The English Riviera Trains have been diesel free. It's just the Weymouths have the diesel tucked inside to facilitate the loco 'change' at Pen Mill.

I know it was a hot day so that might explain the lack of exhaust from Braunton, but it looks like there was a lot of power from the rear on the ascent to Bincombe?

Yes because of the very strong wind blowing the sound away could not really hear Braunton or the Class 47. Only when I looked back at the images did I notice the diesel exhaust. With little recent rain and no forecast today's trip (and the two BIL runs) may I fear suffer the same issue.

 

It's beautiful weather today for the passengers travelling to Weymouth.

I wanted to film the train but needed to hide the diesel so filmed the train head on as it departed from Bristol T.M.
The panoramic view from the hill above St.Annes is excellent as it includes the old Bristol university building at the top of Park Street.

It was good to see Braunton this morning but it was at 07:35 !! I must be mad. <BJ>

Interestingly from the station area last week the exhaust sounds could be heard for longer than usual as Braunton departed. (First log in here for a few days hence delayed response)

Braunton No.34046 Keynsham Station Great Sight

 

Does anyone have any idea what the loadings have been on the BTM-Weymouth trains? Plenty of good photos but the bottom line is are they a commercial success. My hope is that they have been profitable to justify future mainline steam operations.
