Now with the much more appropriate Eastern Discs attached, 61306 approaches Wymondham Abbey station on the MNR with the move back to Norwich Thorpe. Wasn't expecting her to be facing south but it appears the GEML signalmen forgot a steam special was about today... They are quite rare in East Anglia after all! DSC_1114 (2).JPG

Looking at traksy.uk she's currently sat in marks tey loop 161 late. Are passengers still onboard? Thought about booking this for my dad's birthday... Glad I didn't now!

Waited 2 hours at MT and was not disappointed. The train was empty with some coaches running with no lights on, so a dramatic day for passengers on this tour, and got to feel sorry for the crew who will be getting home a lot later than planned.

Yes the stopper back to LS was an ignominious end to what was a great day behind the B1 on the other hand plenty of foto opportunities at Ipswich was a bonus. Must have been a while since a B1 and a 37 were both head of their trains at the buffers at Norwich.

Further detail on the disgraced class 33, according to a report from within NR the DL was reported as "leaking". Whether it was fuel, coolant, lub oil exhaust fumes or tea wasn't clear.

It's a long way north of the Thames for a class 33/2. Parcel vans to Channelsea was pushing your luck in the 1970's!

    Cheers, Neil

We lineside on the MNR followed a substantial trail of leaked oil on the track in the tour's wake as it headed back to Norwich Thorpe. Perhaps that answers the question?

I travelled behind the offending Class 33 from York to Hellifield last year so they do still work of the Thames!

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned an email that SD sent yesterday evening. (I have only just got around to looking at emails since yesterday morning.)

Summarising: NR's failure to get the train turned when leaving Norwich the first time not only necessitated extra work and time at Dereham but also meant that Mayflower did most of the work from Dereham back to Norwich and thus got through more water than planned. (Also, not mentioned in the email, while we waited for the road from Norwich the loco blew off a few times, wasting a bit more water.) All would still have been OK if the diesel had been able to help on the next leg, but it failed soon after leaving Norwich (with what SD report to have been a fractured coolant water pipe). By the time we reached Ipswich the water was too low for the loco to safely continue to its scheduled water stop at Marks Tey loop. So it had to sit at Ipswich until the local fire brigade arrived to give enough of a top up to reach Marks Tey. It and the train eventually passed Stratford 166 minutes late.

Disappointingly, SD have said nothing about any compensation for the passengers, nor about their seeking any compensation from NR.
