'Tornado' and support coach looking rather splendid while sat in front of the canopy at Bristol Temple Meads this morning between 10:48 and 11:08.
It then departed for Doncaster, exchanging whistles with 34046 'Braunton' which was on shed at Bristol Barton Hill.

The West Coast working is BIL.It left Rugby a couple of minutes down with 2 maroon coaches .

Well, one k nackered smokebox door but thank god we've got it back. The lads at Carnforth will get 5 litres of black emulsion from B&Q and have it looking like new by the end of today.

And it might be a while before you Southerners get your hands on it again, the Carnforth lads don't expect to have to rectify damage after lending their tackle out. The Northern lads can take BIL over t'Pennines and Cumbrian fells and bring it back in better condition than that.

 

Pardon my ignorance, but can someone tell me what causes the scorching on a smokebox door. Thanks.

 

Hot ash from the fire tubes, that builds up inside the smokebox, if not cleared, it can scorch the door and ring modern mesh screens break up the particles and the small ash falls to the floor

 

Yes. It's not really a huge deal--- compare posts 408 and 448 on the GB XII thread. Sorted overnight on the B1.

 

I must admit that seeing BIL through Bletchley yesterday, I didn't notice any scorching of the smokebox door at all. On the Saturday trip to Weymouth though I did think that they metal/paint looked a bit degraded in an area 7 o'clock to centre.
Nothing to raise any fuss over though and all in a day's work for the fantastic crews that support this beauty.
