I see the train eventually got back to York after 1 am. Quite a testing day for passengers, stewards and crews who were at the mercy of the elements.

There is not really much that can be planned in advance to anticipate such an event. With problems on the roads in the area and the number of people to transport, a return by rail was the only sensible solution. Even then, the rescue traction had to be close enough for that to be practicable, not to mention the need to muster extra crews.

Well done to all for getting everyone back eventually. Lucky that Carnforth was not several hundred miles away from the incident.

Also noting that the stock got back to Carnforth after 4.30... Could any other TOC have found a crew for that?

Hear hear. Unlucky that the landslide if it had to happen didn't happen an hour earlier before they left Carlisle. Lucky that it didn't happen any later. If the train had been stopped at Dent, they would have been there a long long time.

One hour 50 York to Carnforth Stn with the empty stock is quite impressive.

NR now saying the S and C not expected to reopen across the affected section today.

Lets also not forget NR, they had quite a bit on their plate but sorted things quite quickly under the circumstances.

WCR obviously have a very credible recovery plan ready to employ in the event of such an incident that occurred yesterday. What was apparent at Carlisle was the number of staff that they threw at the problem, I think even a relief crew was employed to get 35018 back to Carnforth. Speaking to a number of passengers, they were well informed as to what was to happen for the return journey, route etc. WCR can sometimes take a bit of flack on here, but yesterday they showed their true worth in dealing with an issue that wasn't of their making. Pays to run steam charters close to Carnforth ;).

Definitely. Southall is no Carnforth so down south we have to take what is possible if there is a hitch.

Poor Bil, had a reminder of the Sea Side, blue skies, warmth and sunshine of its youth, and then forced back to this. Lots of rain, mud, crap, and places called HELLifield, GREYrigg, and DENT.

Better than meeting her WATERLOO, getting the wrong PAIGNTon, going to MINEhead or the real horror having to visit Swindon.....

Don't you be concerned about 'Poor BIL' , it thrives in difficult condition up on t'Nortern Fells. Put a couple of feet of snow down in Cumbria and watch it go.

Surrey Hills? aye, send Clan Line oop 'ere for a couple of week, 10A will show it what doing a bit of proper hard work is. And they won't damage the paint job.:Joyful:

If you're that keen for a run behind 35028 come down south and join the ACE. Or if you want a run over some proper hills the Devon Banks are calling...
