    Nearly right, 39ft not 46ft.

I think they were the last remaining 39ft rails on the NYMR in the main line.
Unusual in that they were BH and not FB rails.

I've just been watching the Channel 5 series on the NYMR.
How on earth did the boilersmith manage to get a signal for his mobile inside the firebox of the Q6?:)

I received an email yesterday from the Trainline.com people plugging a new webpage they have created. It includes some very nice interactive content . Details below

"We’ve recently created some 3D interactive content that showcases the LMS 5428 or “Eric Treacy” steam locomotive – the pride of the NYMR fleet – and the historic Goathland station, which you can check out here: https://www.thetrainline.com/via/europe/uk/england/north-yorkshire-moors-railway

Our immersive 360° tour lets you step inside the train, explore its cab (firebox and all) and get a sense of seeing such a prestigious locomotive in Goathland station. I think this would make a great additional resource for your readers and wondered if you’d be open to including a link on your North Yorkshire Moors Railway page? I can happily provide embed code if you would like to embed the 3D model directly on your web page. We’ve also included lots of additional useful information in our article like how to visit the NYMR and the famous film and TV shows to have featured the railway."

As many members may well know, the Moors have webcams at both Grosmont and Goathland. Unfortunately though the Goathland camera has been down for sometime, thankfully it has been restored to working order and is available once more online via the NYMR website. It has though been quite noisy these last few days, as the Beck beside the station is quite high on account of the rain......

    Edit: here's the link:-

I apologise if these questions have been asked and answered before but a quick search did not seem to find them.
Do the locos that are approved to go to Whitby have full main line status or are some allowed to run with some sort of restricted status. I ask as only the B1 ever seems to go out on the main line tours, although obviously the Standard 4 did in its Ian Riley owned days.
The other question is what is the diversion for Grosmont if there is a points failure after the train has departed Whitby? I only wonder as when the Wareham service was running one of the WCRC drivers I know told me that a points failure at Worgret Junction meant they had to go to Wool and recess in the little used sidings there. That of course assumes those now little used points would be functional on the day.

I am no longer involved with the NYMR, so the answer I am about to give could be out of date, but the original position was:
    1. Locomotives running to Whitby has TPWS fitted and have exemptions as any mainline loco would from numerous (over 80, I believe!) Group Standards. Some also have an exemption from the fitting of OTMR, which is a Group Standard requirement unlike TPWS, which is a legal requirement.
    2. The loop at Battersby is the refuge in case of points failure at Grosmont. This is why the Track Access Agreement and Safety Certificate cover to Battersby and there are still occasional trips to maintain route knowledge. (The loop at Glaisdale is used by service trains and the headshunt is both too short for a full train and I believe OOU anyway).
As I say, apologies if any of that has changed but that was the initial position.

Some snippets of news from the NYMR: Rumour has it that Channel 5 are starting to film a third series of "The Yorkshire Steam Railway" Lambton No. 29 worked through to Pickering yesterday for loading onto road transport for its trip to Peak Rail, and S15 825 was test-steam for the first time last week.

On a different note, the NYMR have become the second line, after the Dartmouth Steam Railway, to introduce a "Train of Lights" event, in their case branded as the "Northern Lights Express". This from the press release:

    Northern Lights Express will operate: 30 November & 1, 7, 8, 12*, 13*, 14, 15, 19*, 20*, 21, 22 & 23* December, departing at 7pm. *Two evening services will operate on highlighted dates departing at 5pm and 7pm.

Join us this winter for a trip on our new, Northern Lights Express! This truly spectacular illuminated journey starts at Pickering Station, where our train with heritage carriages awaits you – decorated with thousands of lights.

You will travel through an enchanted forest which is transformed by a multitude of lights and surprises. You will then arrive at Levisham Station, where a dazzling light show will begin. Experience a light extravaganza and a snow covered authentic heritage station, like you’ve never seen before!

Bean Counter is more or less spot on with the above. The main thing that NYMR locos are exempt from is the fitting of OTMR and this limits them to the Esk Valley line to Battersby. 1264 has OTMR and can go nationwide. 76079 originally had OTMR but this was removed when it was bought by the NYMR. All loco crews passed to drive to Whitby have to sign the road as far as Glaisdale so, if there is a points problem they can get out of section. Only a few crews sign the road to Battersby. Although possible, it is unlikely a stranded train would be sent on to Battersby and the most likely option is to run round at Glaisdale and return to Whitby where passengers can detrain and it can be stabled out of section. The idea of dumping 450 passengers at Battersby with its total lack of facilities is not considered to be a good one. Glaisdale is not much better in this respect.

In that extreme, why return passengers to Whitby and not allow them to alight at Grosmont?

Of course you would. I'm getting my wires crossed. I'm thinking of the emergency plan and what would happen if there was a failure of TPWS or other equipment that, under the rules, means the train can't enter service and it is at Battersby or Glaisdale. It would be allowed to return to Grosmont or Whitby rather than leave it at Battersby/Glaisdale for the reason stated. As we don't regularly run there it is a very unlikely scenario but is covered in the emergency plan.

I assume he meant the points for the NYMR branch are not working. . . so they can't get to Grosmont.

Already answered - and I've previously alighted at the branch platform at Grosmont to catch a train from the main station towards Pickering.

We nearly ended up at Glaisdale, when the ground frame release wasn't working (NYMR Side). In the end S&T disabled the lock to let us in. Had this not happened we would have continued into 1, dropped off our passengers and taken water before proceeding to Glaisdale so as to minimise disruption to northern services.

I saw a film crew at Grosmont during our annual stay in Station House last week and info gleaned says they will be filming until Christmas.

BTW, we had our usual excellent, but far too short, stay and were very reluctant to give up the keys and come home. However, we will be back next year as SWMBO loves both the railway and the village.
