    Just a thought. The 8F was back at Carnforth around 2pm on Sunday, so was probably still warm and quicker to prepare when an issue was found with BIL

    Yes they did, both the Glasgow and Edinburgh services were late meaning we were late to start with meaning that the following services caught us up a lot sooner. Had we been away on time things would have been a lot different.
    As for a spare loco, the 8F was the only one, Lizzie could not have been ready in time plus there was no chance of her support crew being available at such short notice.
    Easy to sit and criticise.

    Unlike you, I'm thinking ! ...I think Ralph was answering post 386 which seems to have been written too quickly before facts came out. Looks as though alternative was a cancellation and if I was on the train, I wouldn't want that.

    Yes Ralph, it was a bad combination where the window narrowed even before they got going. But I wonder how much difference that actually made. If they had got up to Grayrigg at 1205 instead of 1215, 12 mins in front of the Glasgow instead of 2 mins, would they have been allowed to go any further? Given the priority not to delay the class 1 trains, that's not a sure thing, so we'll never know. My rule of thumb looking at the CMEs in that path is that if the Glasgow is on time, 1205 is right on the margin for not getting looped at Grayrigg.

    Maybe what we can say fairly is that on the first two runs over Shap with the 8F, fortune favoured the passengers on the train. This time it didn't. And that's nothing to do with WCR, just variations in the hand dealt on the day.

    Well we are now stopped at Blackburn with paramedics dealing with a passenger who has been taken ill. There is an ambulance waiting but the patient has to be stabilised before being moved.
    Therefore there has been a change of plan, Preston passengers have left and caught a Northern service to Preston whilst we go direct to Leyland and Chester.
    Northern have agreed to take these passengers FOC.
