Lot of irony with this. TBEL went with WCR this year as DB couldn't guarantee they could provide a steam locomotive. 3 locomotives appeared in the advertising, 6201; 6233 & 60009. Yet one fails an FTR on Friday and no alternative is available. At least unlike the 28 July farce everyone gets a full refund.

The greater irony is that a loco not in the list was available and rejected in favour of an alternative TOC.

Perhaps you should consider this, even if 6233 or any other suitable loco is in the area, the support crew are not, they have other lives to live and cannot at a few hours notice cancel what other plans they had for a weekend for which their loco was not scheduled to run.

Just for interest, I stopped posting on here regularly over 12 months ago BECAUSE of getting into conversations that contained yours and others constant moaning. Just saying :)

Ralph is right, you can't just magic up a steam loco and support crew with 12 hours notice!

I'm back off to the shadows.

Perhaps one of you could tell me what I am missing here.
Whoever ran the first trip would have been saddled with the NR steam ban (stick a diesel on the front) edict regardless of the loco. No 9 ran diesel assisted as a DBC operation last year due to fire risk.
Which loco not on the list is available? I must assume you mean Tornado, (which I thought was in Scotland) but WCRC operate that now anyway. Could not be Clan Line as they do not get back to London until nearly 2200.
As Ralph said how do you rustle up a support crew at that short notice. I know if I got a call to steward on a Friday morning I would likely not be able to do it two days later.
The most likely loco would be 6201 (which I assume but do not know) currently uses a WCRC support crew. With this weekends weather situation would NR even be interested in looking to plan a move if it was available (is it currently serviceable?)
I assume the only other loco at Southall since 44871 went north is Mayflower, and I doubt a B1 has been gauged.
Jut interested as I was not a passenger.

A loco pool works fine as long as the locomotive owners and support team have enough notice for the run. In this case it was just not possible. <BJ>

On the Torbay Express Facebook page one of their representatives yesterday made the following comment:

"60009 Union of South Africa has failed due to leaky tubes. Unfortunately we have learnt that our standby locomotive is undergoing a boiler washout. We were not aware of this prior to this morning and I can assure you we are also very disappointed that we have been let down this way."

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that 6201 group prefer that at least some of their support crew are present when she is out and about.

Mods - the ad hominem attacks of 5000 Launceston Castle on eminent members of this group are making this thread very unpleasant reading at the moment. I do not come on NatPres to read trolling of this kind.

I find Shireman's recordings of interest. Train timing goes back to the latter days of the Broadgauge (maybe before that), but he is in good company with the famous like the late Rev. A. H. Malan and many more. Those who have copies of magazines, such as Great Western Railway Journal will reference and compare other locomotives timings on similar runs over many long years. It is all part of railway history which is just as important as heritage restauration and many other facets of railways and their operations. Not everyone is able. or in a position, to wave flags, navvy on the permanent way or do many of the things that volunteers do on preserved lines. But that does not mean that they are not interested. It takes all sorts to make the world go around.

Can I dare to ask amidst the thunder- will it run with a diesel instead or is it a full cancellation ? Thanks in advance.

Well done for acting and suspending the account. You might like to remove some of the abuse on the previous page too.

Assuming that TBEL stewards operate in a similar way to RTC and WRC then during the journey they check tickets against the seating plan and note any no shows. After the tour if a notice needs to be sent out to the passengers, which is going to be the most efficient way to deal with this, labouriously sift through the seating plans to find those who did not travel, or just send out a notice to all?

Would have saved them a few bob Ralph. There's a sheet per carriage as you know and all they would have needed to do was look at them and send letters to no-shows. Im my case they know us very well as we've 'done' 43 TBEs since TBEL came into existence in 2009, as well as paid for 4 we didn't travel on for reasons like the 28th. Barry knows all too well what I think about being sent BS like that as I've written to him on previous occasions, as well as spoken to him directly. I also assumed the passengers who were happy to travel on the train would have been told all they needed to be told on train during the journey. Pathfinder's stewards are very good at that, Richard in particular.
