Can’t see that working while loco ownership is fragmented. For example, if you are “third in line”, it might be 25+ years before you get to use “your” boiler, which is likely to be pretty tired by then, meanwhile your share of the initial capital outlay has already been tied up. And that’s assuming that you have meanwhile lined up your overhaul schedule to be ready to receive it ... Can’t see many owning groups wanting to sign up on those terms.

Could imagine it working where one owner has several locos of the same type, but it is still a big capital outlay in an industry where up-front capital is short and many projects are essentially rate-limited by the availability of funding.

    Hi Tom
I agree it would be difficult, but Southern Locomotives do have 5 WC/BBs so it could be viable for them and "Icons of Steam" seem to have 2 or 3 (+ MNs).....

Thing is this, with careful boiler management better wash outs, use of RO water, boilers should last longer so there may be no need for replacement barrels , unless they are already heavily corroded, as boilers that have ran 10 year cycles on only RO water often will show no, or only very limited corrosion and scale damage often needing only stay changing and a retube .

Icons of Steam only has one BoB/WC - 34046 Braunton
They also have 35022 Holland America Line and 35027 Port Line but I believe the MN locos would have very different boilers.

    Hi Keith
You are correct about MN boilers being different, but....
....... Plus Lord Dowding and, I believe, an "interest" in one or two others??

34046 Braunton was temporarily re-named 34052 Lord Dowding for the centenary year of the Royal Air Force.
Air Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding was chief of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.

It was originally planned to rename '46 as '52 for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 2015 but AFAIK it wasn't ready to run until 2016, two years before the RAF 100.

For the purists, the locomotive is wrong for No 52 :D

might it be so that its easier to see when cracks etc may appear, that's why frames are painted red inside, its easier to see a crack in metal against a red back ground than a black one,

So, various Southern engines had that bracket painted red. I'd still like to know why.

if you look closely, that bracket appears to supports the Slide bars , and I would think the reasoning of painting them red was as a way to warn shed staff of possible cracking or rivets coming loose when you think of the forces these parts are subjected to, then it makes sence to be able to detect visually and cracking, or failing rivets as a crack will appear to be black, against the red,

That's an interesting suggestion regarding the frames and one I've never heard before. With regard to the slide bar supports, the only thing going against this is why wasn't it more universally applied to other locos with three bar arrangements such as the BR Class 5's and Britannias? Was there history to the arrangement on Bulleids and Schools?
