No reason at all Anne but the suggestion at the meeting gave a methodology that was immediate.

 

The association own the rally site so it's quite reasonable for them to run the rally. Were entrance fees gift aided this year? Some venues do this.

The WSRA AGM mentioned the Lydeard Shop and Williton Workshops but I cannot remember if that was during the AGM itself or the post-AGM discussions.

 

I’m sure most companies can secure an overdraft, but it doesn’t stop a company being insolvent if revenue expenditure exceeds income. Using an overdraft facility would only hasten insolvency unless it is being used to “spend to save” ie invest in a capital project that would reduce ongoing revenue expenditure.

 

Post EGM discussions Anne, but the demeanour troubled me. I only hope this issue can be solved amicably.

I do not think Norton is under discussion as it is unquestionably in the remit of the WSRA

 

What happens to the various groups around the railway if the PLC goes belly up? I expect the S&D would move to Radstock, but how would the Association and Steam Trust fare? The DEPG would have to find a new home too.

 

And other folk would have nothing to gossip about on Nat Pres....

I'm sure something would soon be found, besides, the inquest would probably fill a hundred pages or so.

 

Deflection tactics Robin. The WSRA is toast if the PLC go bust. Unless you have a plan B.

 

That would depend on what form “going belly up” might take. I would hope both that the groups have enough information to be prepared if it becomes a serious possibility, and that the board would be arranging matters (to the extent possible) to protect the railway.

However, I infer from reports of the EGM that everything is being done to avert such a drastic possibility. Thankfully.

Why are you worried about the on-railway groups? Think of the impact on the local economy.
This is why, as Robin has said, that everybody is working hard to ensure the railway remains a success.
I'll say it again, the railway needs more help, if you can help then do please get in touch and I'll find you a job there are literally hundreds of things that need doing.

 

With respect Robin. You are on the inside and hear what's happening probably before most others. The rest of us only hear from the press or word of mouth and very rarely from the railway itself.

It was a revelation when the permanent way report was issued as few knew that it actually insisted. Some of us would like to know why such things are not routinely published. If documents like that were made available more people would be encouraged to put their hand in their pockets and they would know where their money is going. All we hear at the moment is there's an interesting financial situation and whilst most of that at last Saturday's meeting have a good understanding no one else does. I'm happier than I was but no more.

I know you'll dislike me repeating it again but it does seem like secrecy to many. As an example of the secrecy I remember Steam Railway, I think, saying that a report was being prepared into why so many locomotive springs were breaking. Why has this report or an executive summary never seen the light of day to the railway's supporters? This is the sort of thing which should be routinely reported on.

 

That, of course, is a proper question for the WSR plc Directors.

I’m off to the pub after another full day of heritage railway volunteering and couldn’t but think of the contrast between the gloom fest here on Nat Pres and the WSR of today:

Today on the WSR you could see five steam locos including a Duchess on a Paddington - Minehead. Service trains fully loaded. GWR to BL shuttles operating.

An interesting contrast.
