Edmondson tickets - for those interested

I quite forgot that there have been two other NP threads on card tickets & related topics:

    https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/sourcing-new-edmondson-style-tickets.890242/

https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/edmonson-tickets-a-lost-cause-for-ever.30854/ (Note that the thread title is not spelled correctly!)

The Transport Ticket Society is a very successful organisation and rather disproves your needless remark.

Are you for real - or are you just trolling. Surely no normal person does this on their bedroom walls?

Do they stick them on their bedroom/kitchen walls?

There are lots of people I know, not rail enthusiasts, who keep mementos of places they've been or events they've attended. Some put them in boxes, some make scrapbooks, some frame them and put them on walls, some stick them to their fridge.*

Just because you don't do that, doesn't mean nobody does it.

    * the range of fridge magnets with 1950s BR-style magnets of virtually every heritage railway station in the country suggests to me that this is a popular option.

I have my Invitation from the Lord Chamberlain on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

I have a number of Souvenir Tickets to Special Events at Heritage Railways.

I have a fridge magnet from The Ghan which was (part of a pack of treats) given to me as my journey from Darwin to Adelaide encompassed my Birthday.

These are lovingly retained - though not displayed on a bedroom/kitchen wall (the fridge magnet is actually on the oven door as the fridge is behind a wooden door)

I don't bother to keep tickets from routine rides, though.

As you get older and perhaps downsize I suspect many tend to throw much of this sort of thing away...……..heritage line tickets would be amongst the first items to go!

I don't collect tickets, nor do I collect engine numbers. However, I hate the rather fascist mentality that another person's hobby/ interest is other than normal. Each to his/her own, and good luck.

Sadly, in these politically correct days anyone who disagrees with anything is called a fascist - its particularly disappointing on the 80th Anniversary of the German Invasion of Poland with all that followed..

Are you seriously suggesting that those who are commenting on here and do not agree with you are Fascists?

Well that escalated rather rapidly to the point of Godwin's law....I think the (quite reasonable) point being made was that the attitude that someone else can't possibly do something because you don't do it is a little, er, unreasonable, and possibly dangerously close to the "if you do not see things our way, you are wrong" element of fascist principles.

(Edit to say that, although not a period of history I have closely studied, it's my understanding that Italy, and thus the Fascists, was not actually involved in the invasion of Poland, and didn't join the war until 1940, but hey I'm an engineer, not a historian - that's enough thread drift!)

If I was going to downsize, I'd keep things like heritage railway tickets as they don't take up much space. I'd get rid of larger things like my old VHS recorder and all the VHS tapes I've got that I'll probably never watch again.

More to the point surely a modern card ticket is an opportunity to plug the railway & what it has to offer

Or they could sell the back of the ticket as advertising space to local businesses.

Another point about collecting tickets or any other railway artefact is that they tell the history of that railway. The WSR has its own museums and I am sure that they always appreciate donations that can add to their collections and which will help keep the history of the line being told to future generations.

I was trained from a very early age by my late Father never to throw any thing away that someone else might want or collect. I try to make sure that I pass on any transport related stuff to relevant libraries, collections, museums etc., i.e. The NRM, The Bus Archive, Crich Tramway Museum, Heritage Railways museums, local museums that cover where I live. Please understand that I am not trying to boast or say that I am any better or cleverer than anybody else on here - I just would like to think that most people on here would make the effort to support places that collect and display any stuff relating to heritage, or dare I say modern, transport.

After all, we all benefit from the far-sighted individuals who started the preservation movement and kept so much that has helped the preservation world thrive.

Quite right, Malcolm. The problems facing our Railway right now have been well publicised yet all some people contribute is comments about fridge magnets! FFS.

The fascinating thing is that threads for the other heritage lines don't attract the same amount & type of attention. I'm still failing to see why this might be though.

There is a difference between disagreement and outright condemnation because of a difference in interests though. I will assume that we all believe that we are 'normal' whatever that means.
I choose not to rant abuse from a football stand or hit a small white ball around a golf course. I respect however that some do and therefore why would I comment on their not unlawful interests?
I don't collect tickets per se although have lots of 'stuff' I really ought to get rid of. I'm no snowflake btw since that is the term I sometimes receive whey calling out intolerance.

Ok - an update and its good news...….to follow up this post I submitted a formal application to return. I had a formal email response this morning with a 'thanks but no thanks' response. It was what I was expecting as I have probably ruffled the feathers and egos of many in certain parts of the lanes and byways of West Somerset in the last year or so. I would dispute some of the comments about the 'mess' left behind but life's too short...….

However the good news in the email was 'Nevertheless we are on track to make the Hinkley Point Community fund recruitment target which was around double the average recruitment rate in previous years. Some of this contribution came from the previous team’s work and for this we are grateful.' So there is no shortage of recruitment of new volunteers, so no need for anymore 'holier than thou' posts.

So its goodbye from me....I hope the cycle track never happens but I can no longer make a contribution. I remain a Plc Shareholder and may turn up to AGM/EGMs in the future to ask the odd question or two.

Thanks for all your support over the past 10 years or so and all the 'likes' to my recent posts.

    Mel Hillman
