The new edition of The Railway Magazine is carrying a four page article in tribute to the late Peter Rampton, who was a key figure in the takeover and development of the Vale of Rheidol Railway and the formation of the Brecon Mountain Railway. There is also a list of locomotives and carriages in his personal collection, though I noticed one of the NG15 2-8-2 locos appears twice. The article text talks about 40 locomotives, however I think it's 38.

Rob was a friend of Peter and, as Peter was Chairman of the VoR, well placed to write a tribute to him. Look forward to reading it

Thank you, there are some out there who like to make out they knew more than others, but Rob is obviously a very well placed source!

A very interesting article and a great tribute, and certainly worth a read if you have not already.

I noticed on the list included of 'locos saved by Peter Rampton', that Hudswell Clarke 0-4-2st 'San Justo' was not included. Can anyone say if loco is still part of the collection or exists as a complete loco?
    Thanks in advance.

From what I was told it was owned at one time by James Evans, but he sold it to Peter so he could build Lyd I think the boiler was scrapped around that time as well and the money raised from that also went into the Lyd fund, I could be wrong but I think you will find that only the frames remain.

Like so many rumours about collection X I heard it was proposed that it be rebuilt as a 600mm gauge steam loco.

Should have said, I never knowingly meet Peter, but he was a great supporter of the L&BR when I corresponded with him.

One thing was for sure he was always interested in finding locos and railway equipment from where ever they where, I am sure he would have had a Darjeeling B tank if he could have got hold of one.

It is an amazing collection of what he has saved, I am sure we won’t be so lucky in finding another collection like this again.

Thank you Peter for doing what you did

    Regards

Very interesting article and well worth a read. Similar to the post above, I notice that IMR coach F38 (one of the two Hurst Nelson ex MNR bogie coaches saved by Peter Rampton) is missing from the list. Anyone know what has happened to it?

What an amazing man, and I just wish I'd known about him earlier, rather than reading his obituary. It is characters such as Peter Rampton who have done so much for our movement, and we have to be truely thankful for.
Some of you may know the name Jonathan Minns. He was the chap who saved Brighton Engineerium from destruction in the 1970s. As a teenager, I was privileged to work alongside him, and he was another character who seems to have been cut from the same cloth as Peter Rampton- a true engineering evangelist, whose sheer, larger-than-life enthusiasm infected everyone he came into contact with.
This breed of driven, eccentric and visionary Englishmen are now almost extinct, and we are all the poorer for it, but thankfully we still have their legacy to build upon.
