An entire railway, complete with trains, a mile of track, and three stations on Hayling Island could be yours – for £300,000. The Hayling Island Railway Service has been put up for sale by its owner. The service comes with two diesel locomotives, five carriages capable of carrying 90 passengers, one mile of track, and three train stations along a seaside route....

How do you assess whether the asking price is worthwhile?

The advert I saw in one of the railway mags said £65K plus assets. By my reckoning that means the assets are worth £235K. I have no idea if this is reasonable or not. I hope it sells as it is a great little railway.

It should be noted, the 2 Ruston's on the railway are both privately owned and not included with the sale. The 2 locos mentioned in the sale are Alan Keef Wk No.23 and Motor Rail Wk No.7199.

Having spoken to Bob Haddock recently. The railway is still up for sale.

Has the sale floundered , needs to get its skates on, ;) seriously, its a shame that the miniature railway couldn't extend along the old track bed of the Hayling branch, towards Langstone

It runs on business principles, i.e. not on WIBN

And that's why its being sold, If the IOWSR was run on pure business grounds, not on past romantic memories then would it do so well? getting back to the sale, Its gone flat then, ( as in flat fish) :D

No more fishy "witticisms" please. Bob Haddock wants to retire and how much he wants or can get for his business is entirely a matter for him.

If buying as a business I imagine that you consider what income it would bring each year and compare it to the rate of return you want from your money and thus you have a price? Alternatively it will depend on what you think you can use the land for/sell the assets for or alternatively how deep your pockets are and how wide your dreams are....

Two fundamentally different things - this line isn't even partly built on the old Hayling branch, and in this iteration was never intended to (indeed it hasn't even been an idea since the 80s). To do so it would literally need to go from one side of the town to the other.

It was a shame they were never able to open the extension to connect with the Hayling Ferry, though whether that will survive for much longer is anyone's guess anyway

Was Bob the one who made the comment about needing a full planning enquiry before Hayling residents would allow a sandcastle on the beach?
