This picture was taken in the Signal Box at Bo'ness recently. I think that the little hump of 1 in 80 in each direction at Birkhill was flattened out when track was reinstated between Birkhill and Manuel.

The gradient profile for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway is not currently on the railway's website.

    This is the "official" version.

The first survey results of the dip under the Shrewsbury road are in. CHR between Oswestry and Weston will have sections of around 1 in 80 either side of the bridge. The actual gradient will be measured once track is laid.

It might just be something odd in my settings (I’m using Tapatalk on my phone) but I am seeing the same image multiple times in the first post.

Courtesy of the Kidderminster Station Fund shop, I have just acquired a copy of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway Illustrated Guide (1970 edition!) which has a gradient profile based on a diagram from the Railway Magazine of 1903. I have re-created it using Raven Square as the new datum point - it is a bit rough and ready but hopefully readable enough to be of use. A request for Tom @Jamessquared to add a link the first post.

I had never realised what gradients the W&L has. I need to visit!

I think these gradients are in the nature of wishful thinking at the time of opening. In reality some are a good deal steeper, e.g. the "bunker first" climb to Castle Caereinion.

We'd better not clutter up this general thread with a long discussion. I'll add another gradient picture in the WLLR thread with some extra info, and I suggest we take any further discussion there.

Have added below the profile of the Strathspey Railway including the proposed extension to Grantown. Post 1 in this thread has also been tweaked to show it in the list.

Given that these gradient profiles have been around for a long time, I do wonder what the actual gradient profiles for some lines are like.
I do recall being told that Highley bank, owing to mining subsidence, has moved a fair bit and was actually quite a bit steeper than the quoted 1:100, and I do remember reading an article where the NYMR had discovered that Gothland bank was slightly steeper than it was meant to be.
