Gauging - this is the only combination of routes with in-date gauging certification, within the timescale of the movement request.

    Thanks!

I did wonder whether it was because she had expressed some wish to see Wales again before retirement!

Should be on the Welsh Marches twice in November all being well; BTM to Chester on the 16th; then a week later on the Slough to Shrewsbury.

It's going to be a long day for the support crew, just out of interest how many different drivers will be involved?

6233 powering away from Ely Dock Junction after a scheduled pathing stop. Nice to see my home city get a lot of love from steam recently after a rather long drought! DSC_3468 (2).JPG

And yet various locos have managed to go to and fro between Southall and Carnforth by the WCML. This does look rather like a farewell tour.

N0.9 went Southall-Bury via the WCML in February if I'm right?

Key part of JS’s post was ‘in-date’. Surely all is fine, but without up to date data, if computer says no...

What has happened in the past has no bearing on the route provided for this movement on this occasion, so if NR say this is the only option available then that's the route.

Indeed, understood. What surprises and disappoints me is how readily what is possible one day becomes impossible the next.

Correct - if there is no ‘in-date’ gauging data, it won’t run.

Because steam locomotives are not included in the Sectional Appendix, they are subject to individual gauging assessment for any requested route, the certification for which is currently valid for a year and then lapses.

A steam move may consist of a combination of certificates, each with different expiry dates, which can be awkward if the move short notice and requires an update - hence the circumstances of this move.

It’s the system we have to work with.
