He is doing a stupid thing Steve, what a waste of time.Videoing the train as a subject gives us something to watch not a series of overheads.Completely irresponsible also.

I thought you not allowed to film out of the window on mainline steam specials? I can't believe stewards of Sapho Trains let him do that? I don't anyone want to watch footage behind a steam special, most viewers prefer to see a steam special go past for example a good vantage point or crossing a viaduct, bridge etc?

Very silly man, and his videos are boring. IMO.

The operators will soon get fed up of him and blacklist him. One serious incident on a steam special that's caused by 'window hanging' will stop 'em all.

Where are you Mr Moyles? a question for you....................why do you do it?? your overlong videos are rubbish (IMO) and you're breaking the rules and conditions of travel.

Whilst not seeking to deny the risks of photography from the train there are some locations (e.g.the turnout from Holgate Siding onto the main line; the point where the two-track outside York merges into one track) where still photographers can obtain good photographs from the train without risking "life or limb" with the discretionary monitoring by the coach stewards. Whilst this has been accepted on the day, frequent travel on railtours has meant establishing goodwill and accepting that if - for whatever reason - the steward says "NO" then it is accepted on that occasion. To date that goodwill has been reciprocated and the occasional image from the train has been allowed as noted below on a 2018 trip behind 70000 Britannia; I emphasise - however - that the steward was standing beside me at all times and once I had taken this image I returned to my seat.

Whilst the rules are meant for passenger safety I hope they are not imposed without discretion as there are some locations where images can be safely taken from the train and the regular stewards are normally sufficiently knowledgeable to know where those "safe" and "unsafe" locations are to be found. Sadly the extended videoing by such as Mr Moyles could diminish that discretion.

I’m finding it very hard to believe the Saphos stewards could be as welcoming and accommodating to window hanging as they’ve had been mentioned. Having travelled on an English Riviera Express earlier in the year, the two of us travelling were as much as standing at the window (absolutely nothing to be seen outside) admiring Kingswear and the Dart as we left. I was under the impression, that as we were on preserved metals, window hanging rules would be relaxed. But we were still asked to return to our seats by two stewards within five minutes.

Apparently his luck will be tried one last time on a Scotsman run out of Liverpool in December...

Saphos Trains have just posted this on there FB regarding window hanging, I wonder what triggered them to put this.

    IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDER:

We would like to take this opportunity to politely remind our valued customers that we operate heritage rolling stock with opening windows on the modern-day rail network.

Unfortunately, increasingly overhanging lineside vegetation frequently strikes our train and other trains regularly pass us, often at very high speeds, in BOTH directions. Due to the high speeds often involved you are likely to receive NO prior warning of this.

Any incident of passengers and / or their paraphernalia being exposed from these windows carries significant risk to your safety and any passenger that deliberately ignores our safety instructions puts themselves and indeed other rail travellers and staff in potential danger. Such continued poor behaviour may result in the detraining of such offenders and it may also unfortunately result in refusal to travel on our future services.

All passengers are reminded of this upon boarding and our window notices also clearly request that you do not lean out.

These rules are intended for the safety of ALL of our passengers & staff travelling with us and both your understanding and cooperation will help to ensure our continued safe and successful operation of such wonderful heritage tours across the country.

Not often Fred that your postings disagree with my view of the world but here I do.
The issue with "discretion" from a stewards point of view is that it becomes impossible to manage, as other passengers expect to be allowed to do it when it would not be safe. Then of course what is safe?, as I steward I would not be aware which signal posts or bridges are nearer than normal for a whole journey, nor know the current state of vegetation growth even on tours I do regularly. I steward a large number of Dorset Coast Express trips for example and know some bad areas but would not claim to a passenger anywhere else would be "safe". I would not know what trains may be running late or all the freight services.
I remember a couple of years ago talking to a passenger on a DCE (non enthusiast) who suddenly mid conversation said I want a picture of Poole Harbour (as we crossing it), & before I could even say no he stuck his head out, and straight back in as the Hamworthy stone empties came the other way behind a Class 59. Long time since I have seen someone go white so quickly.
I would not want to be standing in a Coroners Court answering why I said it "was safe" for a head to be out of a window if someone got hit.
The Holgate example you mention would potentially of course more likely be in view of NR staff who would probably.

The issue of Heritage lines being traversed by a mainline tour is more confusing of course. The train will be under the control of a guard from the Heritage line concerned so it could be argued their rules apply, but the tour operator may of course wish to impose their own rules on top of that. Which in the case of the Kingswear tour mentioned could mean you could window hang on a PDSR return journey taken between the tours arrival and departure, but not on the same journey whilst on the tour stock.
