Just read that the miniature railway at Holt is closing. Is this to make way for the installation of the turntable perhaps?

 

Comment I saw from one of the model engineers was that it was to make space for another signal box (for display only).

Is a turntable really being installed at Holt?

As far as I know, yes. It’s already there on display. But I guess it is not at the top of the list of priorities for the NNR as it’s not needed for day to day operations.

 

Does anyone know when the home fleet weekend timetable is likely to appear? Thanks in advance

Talking of next weekend. I'm booked on the Fish and Chip special to Cromer on the Sunday. Will there be a connecting train to Holt after? Trying to make plans re travelling by car (easier but would park at Holt) or train

The M&GN members' days/home fleet weekend was great. Arrived mid afternoon on Saturday just in time to squeeze into newly completed carriage 853, which is looking magnificent. Rode in M&GN no3 at last. Was invited on 2 footplates (first time ever on a footplate in steam). Did a tour of the sheds. Rode to Cromer and back and travelled behind/in the 9F, WD 2-10-0, Y14, B12/3, 4MT, Class 37, and Class 20. Just didn't manage to schedule the Quads. Free (apart from £5 for Cromer) for members and my mate paid, I think £23 for the 2 days as he is over 60. What a bargain! (We did buy quite a lot of food and made a donation to the 31 fund) We both felt we'd been treated to a great gala and were basically spoiled. Last but not least the volunteers and staff were lovely, even in the pouring rain on sunday. This weekend is well worth looking out for next year, it is great value whether you're a member or not

 

As an overseas member of M&GN society, I’m often asked how I get my money’s worth as I can’t get to the railway often.

Well, I’m happy to contribute to a society and a railway that can put on an event like the Home Fleet Weekend.

My trip to the UK was not primarily for the weekend event but I chose the dates to make sure I didn’t miss it. Over the weekend we had the best and worst of the weather but the staff and volunteers ensured that everyone still enjoyed themselves.

A great fleet of locomotives in service (any railway that can turn out a B12 like that is a winner), variety of passenger stock (vintage train, quad-arts and MK 1s) and the great view of the coast makes for a first rate experience.

I made such good use of the opportunity of ‘driver for a fiver’ that the organisers were sick of the sight of me.

I don't really "get" the need to "get money's worth" when subscribing to any preservation society.

I had always somehow assumed that most fellow enthusiasts were grateful for the opportunity to contribute, and perhaps occasionally join in by helping out as a volunteer.

I am of course aware that for many, the expense stretches a limited budget. I myself had to cease membership of KESR when I was displaced from my job with Railfreight Distribution, but rejoined once I was fully earning again.

I applaud those who are committed enough to contribute from distant lands.

 

I look at it a bit like going to see an old fashioned local bank manager for a loan and having to prove your character. When I give to a specific cause, I have to "see" that the money is being used to its maximum potential and that it hasn't been diverted elsewhere behind closed doors. One railway I previously chipped into spent money obtained in a share issue for a major capital project instead on paying sundry operating bills. Now, there is a small clause in the share issue at the bottom of the page that states they are perfectly legally entitled to do this, which is fine, however the exercising of said clause was enough for me to not trust them to give financially to any future appeals. Paying for coal/water/whatever wasn't "value for money", at that time, for me.

I am an armchair member of the Great Central. I like their unique double track and I like experiencing it at galas which is why I became a member in the first place. I will remain a member for as long as they continue to maintain and operate the double track in the hope that my membership in some way contributes to subsidising this feature which probably doesn't make hard commercial sense. In that sense my membership continues to give "value for money" to me as they're still doing what i want to support them doing.

BTW Mr Moxon. The rate you are progressing with that 104 trailer, could we be looking at a 6 car DMU at the next one? (I realise that relies on you hanging onto the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway 101 Power car and fixing engines fast enough to get the NRM one up and running)
