Shropshire was a county of contrasts today, the sun shone around Prees at lunchtime in time for the southbound train but too warm for exhaust.
Hope everyone was able to enjoy their afternoon in Shrewsbury. We seem to have avoided any real rain during the day.
The light failed rapidly though towards the time for the northbound run .

Can Ralph tell us the reason for the wreath ?

The wreath was in memory of Adrian Scales who was a Steward on the Scarborough Spa Express.

The wreath was in memory of a good friend to many of us at West Coast -Adrian Scales - who died last week after a short illness. A life long resident of Scarborough, he was a prominent member of the Scarborough Railway Society and regularly tended to the floral upkeep of Scarborough station. He volunteered in Search Engine at the NRM, the Pickering wagon group on the NYMR and often used to steward on the likes of the Scarborough Spa Express. And as a lover of LMS Duchesses he was part of the small team who keep 6229 shiny and dust free. One of natures gentlemen, he will be missed by many of us.

End of the day with the landslide on the Little Northwestern line causing the Lune Rivers to be diverted a lot of credit must go to Network Rail and West Coast for such a quick turnaround. The Stewards at Carnforth did a splendid job of giving out the latest updates

Well that was a real saga, the stock was in the U&D goods loop waiting for the 7.15 Barrow train to go through, before running into the platform, when the TM got a phone call with the news. We set about informing the waiting passengers that there would be a delay, and shortly afterwardstold the passengers that as the delay was likly to be about an hour, free tea and coffee had been organised at the Royal Station Hotel for all passengers. Fortunately several of the passengers knew people who had intended to join at Bentham and Wennington so they were advised to come to Carnforth. Meanwhile plan 'B', put a diesel on the back and after getting passengers on board, to head for Preston and turn on the Lostock triangle, was abandoned and plan 'C' instigated, take SG back into the yard and turn her, and attach at south end of stock. This of course all takes time and finally we had to wait for the 09.15 Barrow train to pass before the stock could finally set back into the platform.
We ran briskly to Preston where water was taken, and set off again passing Farington Junction only 19 minutes late by the original schedule. We swept through both Wigan and Warrington at a fair rate before arriving at Crewe 4 late, watering in platform 12 is always slow and we departed 16 late arrivongin Shrewsbury 8 late.
We left a few mintes late running steadily to Crewe where an extended stop to fill to max meant we departed 17 down and trundled along the slow to Winsford to allow a late running LM service to pass. Once this had headed off to Liverpool we set of with purpose and recovered 8 minutes by Farington Junc. A short stop in Preston again to allow a couple of trains to pass and we were off again, Lancaster was passed in fine style but apparently no videos taken there, a geat pity. Back into Carnfoth 97 early....
So NR did pull the stops out to accommodate the change of route and the day ended well with no grumbles from those who count, the passengers.
A couple of pints of Lancaster Black slipped down very well in the Royal Station Hotel bar, and I had the pleasure of being ably to buy one for Mr Kelly as he joined us after putting SG to bed.

The best laid plans etc. It was a good recovery by West Coast yesterday. Fortunately for our little group of photographers who had arrived very early at Eldroth, we had time for a quick dash to Carnforth and then drive around looking for a spot for this unusal southbound morning steam departure. By luck I came across this flooded field at Bolton le sands which if you look carefully had become a seagull sanctuary who all took off when Scots Guardsman came charging south. I have no aerial shot of this train as I headed my aerial camera in a rapid up direction to avoid the flock :)

Well, I didn't get Lancaster on the return, but that was because I (we - Bob Avery and I) got it there on the way out, and I did get it at Wigan on the way back, so here's my record of a great, if somewhat odd, day:

This should now run as intended, sorry for any confusion!
