Although I don't like these multi-engined trains this had a combined tractive effort of 115,422 lbf. A good bit more than the LNER Garratt at 72, 940 lbf but still short of a Big Boy at 135.735 lbf. Was this a UK record or has it been beaten in the heritage era? If only they had added the K1, as well. That would have brought it up to a good 147, 502 lbf, which I'm sure would have been a British record.

Not sure why the 9F was added on to the trains it was today, you shouldn't be changing what is advertised without good reason. Particularly if you are going to stick something on tender first in front of other engines people have come to see! I can smile as I've been fortunate to see 6023 plenty of times closer to home at SVR, GWSR & Didcot, but for those based in the north this could be a rare chance to see the King. Equivalent for me would be 62005, lovely loco that I have only seen the once before on a trip to the highlands.

Speaking of the King, it was only leaking a little bit this morning...

The King was scheduled for only two southbound, ie boiler-first runs; the 10.35 with 62005 on the back (which ran in that formation), but because it was a morning run the sun was on the wrong side for some of the best uphill locations.

The other was the 16.02 with nothing on the back. By then the morning cloud had cleared and the light was right.

92134 on the other hand was scheduled for no runs today, although it was good to see it given a run when it left Grosmont nose to nose leading 2253 on the 13.37 freight, although the nose to nose was a strange choice even then. The return 14.36 redressed the balance a bit by having the two locos tender to tender with 92134 leading on the downhill run. By then the 9F had had its run out.

It takes a special kind of perversity to then only an hour later to couple it boiler to boiler in front to upstage the star of the show.

If this photo isn't a perfect example of a monumental cock-up, I don't know what is. A 9F mooning at the people who'd made an effort to be there. IMGL2941-Web.jpg

Apart from the obvious excuse of further running with insurance (i.e. another loco around) it provides a surprise element for those braving the weather and distance to visit the Gala methinks.

Hopefully you have made it home by now! K1 left Goathland with S160's train around half 8, so about 1 hour 50 late. Black 5 came up after, arrived not long before 9 I think. Don't know when it got to Pickering. The beer festival and live music on the station no doubt helped cheer the stranded passengers!

All of the passengers hanging out of the windows seem to be enjoying the combination.

the people upset by the combination will be those on the lineside . Whilst many will knock them a good image is worth a lot in publicity terms and many of these would have supported the photo charters that were usually run . Unfortunately the railway has as I understand it declined to run them now

Without the 9F that would be an average photo of just another train pootling along. With the 9F it’s newsworthy and a record of an historic occasion. I don’t understand the objection.

Best ride I had was on Friday with 60009 tender first - reason being we could hear the exhaust better :)

Thankyou very much free2grice and 60017.

It was very disappointing that the 9f piloted the second run of the King and the point is often made that 'photographers don't contribute' or words to that effect to justify it or to dismiss, and it is true a number won't. But many photographers will travel one day and photo another or buy tickets and use the railway for food etc. Additionally lots are members and have been for years, putting in many hundreds of pounds, for who seeing the King on the railway would be something special and that was spoiled yesterday. There will also be people who travelled long distances to ride behind the King on the line specially for the experience of riding behind a King on the lines gradients, that was taken away from them. Adding to the point is the railway put out on Wednesday that the 9F would not take any part in the gala. Only for it to turn up leading S160 on it's first appearance of the weekend and a goods and then upstaging the king. Both of which felt like a bit of an insult/deliberate act to spoil it for people line side.

Alterations from webcam viewing so far today.

62005 worked 0900 ex Pickering instead of the failed 2253.

92134 worked 1027 ex Grosmont instead of 29/65894.

76079 on Whitby shuttle instead of 62005.
