Sell the wheels off, use what's left for a H15...

Of the main components & wheelsets, out of the seven S15s that went to Woodhams, can I assume that all are still existing with the exception that there are only five tenders?
MidHants have an additional boiler along with 828, 499 & 506
NYMR have 825, 830 and 841 but only the two boilers and one tender
Bluebell of course have the excellent 847

There are also the frames of a second, 6-wheel Maunsell tender at the NYMR, this had previously been converted to a snowplough. I believe this is to be used with 830 if restored...

Is this for a 4000 gallon tender? Some S15s ran with these tenders which I believe had flat sides unlike those that were built for the schools and moguls which had the turned in top edge.

One of the tenders at the Mid-Hants came from Eastleigh works, where it had been converted to a diesel engine test bed.

That was a bogie tender, which is going to be used with '506 or '499, if it hasn't already - I would imagine '499 as that was a later departure from Barry

checking my photo archive and the tender database, I have the following in order of return to steam :
841 (now runs with 825) 3238 Maunsell 5000Gal 8wheel bogie tender (Flat sides) - this was tender at withdrawal / Woodhams
    506 & 499 - 3208 (ex Eastleigh)Urie 5000Gal 8wheel bogie tender & 3223 Urie 5000Gal ex 825
    828 - 3227 Urie5000Gal 8wheel bogie tender - this was the tender coupled to 830 at Woodhams
847 - 887/3225 convert from Urie 5000Gal 8wheel bogie tender to Maunsell pattern (Flat sides) ex 828. 6W Tender at withdrawal from KA 30797 was purchased for U class 31806 and since scrapped.
    825 - per 841 (825 was Withdrawn with Urie 5000Gal 8wheel bogie tender used with 506)
499 - was withdrawn with 6W Maunsell tender SR882 ex 30835 and was sold for use with 31806 & 31625)

According to the ULS website tender 3223 was bought from Barry to be paired with 499. The VCT tender survey lists 3223 as being last paired with 825 when it entered Barry.
Tender 3208 was previously misidentified as 3214 and was bought from Eastleigh to be used with 499. It has now been restored and is working behind 506 until 499 is complete. I assume that 506 will then be paired with 3223

841 definitely came out of Barry with an 8 wheel tender. I have memories of sitting in it with several other younger SVR members on the evening the loco was unloaded at Chappel in 1972. The loco had been shunted down the yard whilst the north end of the yard was sorted out following the unloading, some of the older members on the footplate thought it would be funny to dispose of the days rubbish in the firebox.....
Before long a healthy looking column of smoke was appearing from the chimney resulting in more than a few appropriate and unprintable comments......

The tenders behind southern locos is almost bewildering in its complexity, even without taking into account subsequent preservation history. Not infrequently, new locos were built and never ran with the tenders constructed on the same order, but instead had an older tender as part of a cascade. S15s swapped between eight wheel and six wheel tenders when they moved off the Western division, where the turntables were larger.

One combination I'd quite like to see (with 506 on the Mid Hants): Urie S15 with 4,000 gallon Drummond "Watercart" type tender. I wonder if the NRM would be amenable to the swap when 120 comes out of traffic!

I like your thinking Tom. Would 499 in LSWR livery suit a borrowed water-cart from 30120 more than 506?

    Thanks Keith,

Heritage tender register has this for 3223 hence why I missed any association to 506 or 499 as not formally linked in the database.

'Tank removed in April 1990 and has subsequently been scrapped. Restoration of the frames started with removal of the front 11'6" of the frame and replacement as well as a new front bogie pivot. Worked stopped after the purchase of the chassis of Urie 5000 gallon tender no. 3208 (q.v.). 3223 arrived at Woodham Bros, Barry attached to SR S15 no. 30825. Tender number is based on the last tender shown as allocated to this loco by BR records. Frames are stored at Alton.'

I assume that each of the seven S15 entered Woodhams with either a Urie or Maunsell patten 8w bogie tender so I'm not sure if any of these were scrapped at Barry or would have found further use? Woodhams did scrap two S15s in 1965, numbers 512 and 844 and I assume their tenders went with them.

No, they were a mid 1930s swap (so you could do it in SR livery). The LBSCR class K Baltics were being rebuilt to N15X standard with the aim that they would take over some of the passenger turns run by the S15s. So the N15X took the 5,000 gallon Urie double-bogie tenders from seven of the S15s; and those seven then took 4,000 gallon water carts from - as I recall - Drummond C8 4-4-0s that we’re being withdrawn. In the end the N15X turned out to be less useful than thought, so the S15s still ended up on passenger turns when required.

Would have to look up the numbers involved, but as I recall, 506 had one of the watercart tenders (as pictured) but 499 didn’t.

847 had a six wheel tender attached in about 1959 which was there when withdrawn (ex King Arthur “Sir Blamor de Ganis”). When purchased for overhaul, a Urie tender that had previously been attached to 828 was purchased at the same time. That tender has been subsequently modified to update the tank profile to the Maunsell design.

Thanks Tom - my earliest personal photo I have is 847 at the Bluebell in May 79 and it has a Urie fluted top 8W (ex 828) which will be the one converted to flat-sided. I'm now wondering what happened to it's six wheeler - would it have already gone by the time 847 was purchased for the Bluebell? I recall a batch of engines leaving Woodhams bound for the Bluebell around this time including 847, 80100, 34059, 30541, 73082 and 92240 (1978/79?)
830 was the last S15 to linger at Woodhams and in 1980 on my final visit to the yard, it still had it's Urie 8wheeler at that time.

Edit - looking at images from 1973, 499 also arrived at Woodhams with SR882 a Maunsell 6W tender taken for use with U 31806 & 31625

The tender from 830 ended up with 828 (photos on their Facebook site show the number after rubbing down the tender)

So reading the chassis notes, the MHR has 2 tenders, one that ran behind 506 first, ( now stored) and two tender frames, one from Eastleigh, which had a new tender tank ( now with 506) and the part restored tender frames from 499's original tender i'm assuming this stripped chassis will be a source of spares for 499 & 506 things like bogies etc, so in theory, if the Essex loco Soc want an original 8 wheel tender frame, then the one at ropley might one day become available,

I have edited post #29 above - and thank you all for filling in some gaps and for allowing deviation from discussing 825
