PROGRESS REPORT: a lengthy statement by our Chairman Mark Walker:

Last night we held our first management group telephone conference. Getting everyone in one place for a meeting is very difficult, but the application of a little technology got almost everyone together at the same time.

Although there is much going on, I hope you will all understand that we cant always shout about things as they happen, either because we aren't 100% sure something will happen, or because the person we are talking to doesn't want us to, or because we aren't sure which particular route we will take on a specific item. We will tell you as much as we can as soon as we can. For the time being, what we can say is:

We are working with a specialist brake company, who have said that while our original plan to use the 58 braking system is viable, certification of the design would be easier and cheaper if we rebuild the original EM2 bogie braking system. The issue here is missing/life expired parts, but we are looking at the options. We have also had it confirmed that it is possible to create a dual brake system using the existing brake frame with the addition of a combination of class 56 and 37 parts, and we have received an offer to design the full system.

We have made a fantastic contact at an electrical company with lots of rail industry experience. We now know roughly what the range of costs will be to refurbish the existing alternator and traction motors, from a basic overhaul to a full rewind and armature rebuild. We have had it confirmed that it is possible to rework components from the class 56 electrical cubicle to replace the missing items in 58022, and a contact who is able to do so.

We will hopefully soon be receiving a considerable amount of technical information about the original EM2 bogies and the class 58 chassis. We already have a full set of drawings for the EM2 bogies, but the additional information will be very useful.

Speaking to the contacts above has led us to another contact with considerable experience in loco chassis design, who will be a great help. We have drawings of the existing chassis and our proposed design for the 10000 chassis, and we now have the expertise available to get us from one to the other, and produce a chassis that will be safe and certified.

A technical document is being produced to complement the existing business plan, detailing precisely how the different parts of the loco will be constructed.

So, there is lots going on, and all good. Its all exciting stuff, and as soon as each aspect of the build is confirmed, we will let you know.

This is all just amazing stuff, really.

From a project that seemed for so long to be moribund to one that is coming along in leaps and bounds that will soon - hopefully - be able to right one of the major wrongs of railway preservation in the 20th century. Long may it continue!

The Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society are very pleased to say that we have today signed the lease on our new storage shed and workshop at Wirksworth on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.

This is not a loco shed. That is still a project for another day. But it is just what we need to store our growing collection of parts and start work on our equipment.

Our thanks go to Mike Evans and Leigh Gration at the EVR who have been really helpful in getting everything organised for us.

Today was our first proper working party at the shed at Wirksworth. Thanks to Mark, Michael and Tony our Trustees and new volunteers Andrew and Bernard for coming along. A skip was filled, but we have cleared enough undergrowth and ancient junk to fill another next week. We also started pulling out around 50 old bus tyres left by a previous tenant. It’s starting to look good, and next week we will start painting. An excellent day all round.

Our sleeper coach 10597 was delivered to Wirksworth by Reid Freight on Tuesday.
Thanks to Porterbrook for it's donation, which provides accommodation for volunteers

 

On Friday 6th of December, the Society's President Stan Fletcher officially opened our workshop. It is named Centenary Works in recognition that this is his 100th year. Components will be stored and overhauled at the workshop, beginning the task of constructing 10000. A thorough clean and painting of the building and the surrounding area has improved the visual appearance and made a statement of intent for the future. Thanks to Waverley Security, owned by a member of the society, the new workshop now also has an excellent modern security and fire detection system in place. Having a base to work from has already been a great boost to the project. Members will be invited to inspect progress soon.

The newly updated D16/1a GA has arrived. It is good to know that all equipment fits and comes in at the required weight.

 

Last week we were at the DPS to discuss the purchase of a Spanner boiler for 10000. This picture is of Tulyars boiler, which is not for sale, but the DPS have enough spares in stock for us to build up a boiler and provide a good supply of spares.

Given the high costs associated with the installation and difficulties surrounding diesel operated steam heat systems, wouldn't it be more prudent to build the loco itself first and have train heating as a secondary aim after the main achievement is...well...achieved?

Our new fire / intruder alarm is now set up and working. Thanks to Waveley Fire & Security Ltd for an excellent job, and for working until 2.30am to get it finished!

 

A learning experience today as we stripped the first of our exhausters. Thanks to Bernard, Mark and Tony for their efforts

 

We currently have a unique and one-off opportunity to obtain parts and spares to complete our ‘shopping list’ of major items for the construction of 10000.
This includes traction motors and a large number of bogie spares from Holland, cooler groups and electrical equipment including alternators. These items are available to us but only if we move quickly - its now or never.

That’s the good news. The issue is that all of this equipment needs to be moved in a short space of time, during which we are already financially committed to moving two power units, lifting, stripping and moving the bogies and chassis, getting our new sleeper coach ready for volunteer use and covering the ongoing costs for our new Centenary Works building. Combined, an additional £30,000 will be needed.

To take up these fantastic opportunities, we need to raise funds to lift and transport these large and heavy items within the limited time they are available to us. Some of the items have been offered as donations if we are able to fund the transport, and all are in dry stored or running condition.
