And if the south yorkshireman dosent go on the origional outbound route via hope valley and barnsley via horbury east jct, The mileage going straight up eastbound on the new outbound route via the calder valley via Rochdale and Hebdon bridge to Sheffield will work out with shorter steam mileage.

Oh dear. A change of route is acceptable where it is required by NR and the trip is a destination trip. Where the route itself is the real point of the trip, that's not good. So it's caveat emptor for the Cotton Mill in the spring.

The RTT times as far as Manchester are identical to those stated in RTC's letter as "the ACTUAL booked departure and arrival times", but the return times are much earlier, as would be expected for the shorter outward route. The ticket is for travel "TO SHEFFIELD AND RETURN", but I suppose that is still correct with nearly an hour there. (N.B. I'm not shouting but using upper case where RTC have used it.)

E-mail from RTC, who were informed yesterday that NR have identified a “gauging prohibit” north of Sheffield. Despite efforts of WCRC and NR to solve the issue the prohibit remains. NR have timed an alternative route. The train runs as per RTT times.

Yes I got that as well. So it's not a mistake; it's Network Rail and its infrastructure despite the fact that umpteen steam trips go northbound from Sheffield.

It's all very well the RTC saying that they will work to try and get the 'Prohibit' lifted for future trips but what is going to change to make that happen? Will NR move the track? Of course not. Will they remeasure, do it properly and find that a speed restriction will do? Probably. Meanwhile - and I realise that it's not the fault of the RTC, the USP of this trip - i.e. Barnsley is lost.

    What a waste of money.

I believe it is an issue on the line to Wincobank Junc not the Barnsley line at all.......

Here's a novel idea - check RTT instead of asking the question here.

Even more bewildering and there was me suspecting the single bore tunnels at Woolley (although Tornado shot through). There must have been a lot of lifting or shifting north of Sheffield if a Black 5 won’t fit.

Well the tin bath has gone up through barnsley before via huddersfield and on the penistone line there is scores of short tunnels and also probably the smallest gauged engines black 5,s to run on the mainline unless 76084 is smaller so whats the problem?

Gauging. Are you not on the trip? In which case have you not read the email from the RTC?

On a positive note about Sunday, if there is one, as I'll still be getting off at Sheffield, anyone fancying an onward double headed steam ride westwards will still get the Hope Valley. So send me a message if interested.

Very murky at Moses Gate with the fog just lifting, draincock stuck open. Even foggier at Castleton. Bang on time both places. P1110549.JPG P1110550.JPG
