Well, it didn't last long! They were rubbing it all down again today with sandpaper.

No varnish on it yet Matt plus a bit more final finishing yet, looking superb though.

According to the NRM website she will be back on display on Monday 22nd Dec, which is disappointing as I'm on next Sunday's Lpool-York Yuletide Express and had hoped to see her new livery. Should'nt have agreed to switch trains when RTC called ](*,) ](*,)

I was around and had an interest in steam in the the age when there were still different liveries, but was never an anarak who knew what was in which colours and when and quite honestly I didn't really care. So I think you credit 'joe public' with too much knowledge, the average man in the street could not tell you what era that livery is supposed to represent. To them it's a big shiney new engine that has just been built from scratch at a cost of £3 million.

Probably find it would be wet and dry paper to flat the paint surface, any grade of sandpaper would destroy the enamel paint immediately. As for the livery choice im sure i read that Dorothy Mather made the choice for the first livery.

Yep, can't blame them for wanting it perfect, looking forward to see it when finished.

GuyCarr, don't go explaining these things to me, it was a tongue in cheek comment..

Getting back on topic. Being a Darlington engine and all that the one bit missing off the livery that has been brought to my attention is the lack of green cyclinder covers. Strictly speaking the black ones do go with the Doncaster shade of green though which she is painted in! Interesting as a point of detail and authenticity.

I think you will find that the rubbing down is to allow the final laquer spray coat to take hold. We were horrified at being told to do this on 4160 at minehead shed in august 1993 but looks amazing when the laquer is sprayed over the sanded paint!

On the subject of finishing, I'm surprised no one has pointed she wasnt actually finished for the NRM launch and only one side was lined out!

She was still in the paint shop on Sunday but finished, and this is not speculation as I was in there and saw for myself.

Oh good. I've always thought that the rimless chimneys spoiled the looks of the A1's
