Hornby 2009: the speculation and the truth...

Have Bachmann bought the factory - I can find nothing on the net to that effect.

If I were a Westerner, then I'd want a completely retooled 'King' (rather than the fairly half-hearted attempt made a few years back), a 'Castle', and possibly a new 28xx, with a view to going 2884 at a later date. Then, over the next few years, I'd expect the return of the 'Saint' class, a revamp of the 'County' class, and then the charting of relatively new territory regarding the Churchward 4-4-0 classes. Unfortunately, though, I'm enjoying attention given to the Southern Railway (isn't it about time Bachmann did a few new Southern locos, such as the U and U1 classes?) :-k .

 

Bachmann could quite easily do the U, apart from larger wheels that the N and with small splashers added on the running plate. Thats the basic appearrance sorted.

I would love to see a Brighton K mogul, such a handsome loco, and any Southern layout would look even better with one of these knocking around.

 

What with the recent king Arthur's offered by Hornby a S15 might be a possibility.

 

To be honest, I'm surprised they didn't do it this year, as there isn't a great deal of difference between the two: smaller wheels, no names and painted black in BR days.

With all due respect, no there is not.

I would guess that both major manufacturers will reduce their output during the next couple of years as a result of the current economic uncertainty. There will be newly tooled models, but not in the same numebrs as previous years.

What is it with the Hornby Bulleids and being a fab design and great detailing that they have to hold the trailing axle and coming off the track? Didn't the previous models have the trailing axle on a spring so hence more turning circle and more weight?

 

But that results in a larger than scale gap between the trailing truck and the frames. Its a compromise to enable the gap to be closed, while still being able to go around 'trainset' curves.

Am I right in thinking that this idea was first tried on the Cartazzi axles on the LNER pacifics?

 

When will someone do a GWR 15xx ??

I think it was the LNER Pacifics that first had the Cartazzi treatment. Personally, I think it is a good idea. I'm willing to accept a compromise if it means the loco has more detail to look at (and the fixed Cartazzi really does look the bees' knees with the extra piping that this has allowed!). I'm fairly lucky on my 6x4 oval layout that I've spent a lot of money on scenery, which disrupts the view of the curves (one side has a tunnel, and the other a cutting with a road-over bridge), so that the Cartazzi going over the side of the rail surface is not so noticeable.

 

i'm hopeing for more lyddle end bildings - or maybee hornby should do their 00 gauge cars in N?

Over on mremag.com, Pat Hammond has confirmed that the Bassett Lowke range will be in the Hornby catalogue next year, and that there will be one or two new models in that range. Also, recession notwithstanding, there will be a number of brand new OO models including 'things you have asked for' and 'a few surprises'.

Hornby will this year be unveiling its 2009 range on its website on Christmas Eve rather than at midnight on the 31st.

 

A rumour that has some credibility is that Hornby will produce a Class 395 'Javelin' unit next year. This makes sense as it will operate in Hornby's back yard and will be in much demand during the build up to the 2012 Olympics, thus providing a good return on the tooling investment.

It is likely to be in the Pendolino style i.e. good quality trainset detail rather than super detailed.

well i just got the british railway modelling calendar for 2009, adorned with pictures of their 'new' releases. they are
(in chronological order): schools 'brighton', WR diesel railcar, railroad 9F, bassett-lowke peckett 'wenman', BR king arthur 'sir ironside', maunsell carriage, a weathered BR T9, a morris minor, an 8 plank wagon, a BR 4MT, a CAIB PGA, and the 2009 promotional wagon. i was very interested in the peckett, until i realised it was in O gauge.

 

The January issue of Model Rail has apparently been delivered today to some subscribers, complete with next years range in the news section! The information is not released on Hornby's website until midnight tonight.
